Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position will assist in supporting the delivery of, construction and maintenance of the county’s transportation system, including the county highways, state aid highways, and bridges. The Shop Foreperson will perform highly skilled work maintaining, inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing vehicles, heavy equipment, and gas- and diesel-powered construction equipment in a manner to ensure that all equipment is safe, equipment life is maximized, and equipment is reliable and safe when used by the Public Works Department; perform field maintenance on equipment; design, fabricate parts and equipment; perform annual commercial vehicle inspections, and perform shipping and receiving duties.

The incumbent exemplifies the characteristics of a collaborative, innovative, and resilient work culture, modeling appropriate behavior to foster and sustain a positive work environment within the department. This position works in partnership with employees, other departments/divisions, external agencies, and the public to deliver effective and innovative services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

A. Operates light to heavy motorized equipment for highway maintenance and construction, ensuring proper maintenance and inspection protocols are followed. Coordinates equipment service, maintenance, and repairs, including scheduling downtime and procuring necessary parts.

B. Evaluates equipment malfunctions, identifying optimal repair solutions while directing and educating staff on maintenance procedures. Prioritizes cost-effective repair methods for efficient equipment operation.

C. Conducts field maintenance on equipment, implementing temporary repairs as needed to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.

D. Collaborates with supervisors to design and fabricate parts and equipment, ensuring adherence to safety and compliance standards. Manages inventory of welding supplies and equipment to support fabrication needs.

E. Reviews, drafts, and recommends capital equipment specifications to supervisor; inspects purchases for compliance with specifications.

F. Conducts annual commercial vehicle inspections. Performs repairs to ensure vehicles meet inspection standards and maintains detailed records.

G. Manages inventory of parts, tools, and supplies, following established standards and procurement procedures.

H. Performs maintenance on department buildings and grounds, conducting safety inspections, system checks, and arranging necessary repairs.

I. Maintains the fuel island, conducting monthly inspections and maintaining detailed records, diagnosing and repairing any identified errors or issues. Conducts routine maintenance, including filter replacements, in a timely manner. Arrange yearly inspections to ensure ongoing compliance and operational efficiency.

J. Ensures shop operations comply with safety regulations, conducting inspections of tools, attachments, and lifting equipment.

K. Undertakes Highway Maintenance Worker duties as required, operating equipment for various road maintenance tasks including snow and ice removal, chemical applications, and vegetation management.

L. Executes road maintenance activities, including patching and repairing various road surfaces.

Additional Functions:

A. The incumbent is responsible for effectively managing their workload to achieve departmental goals. Assures that responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations and county policies and procedures.

B. Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency.

C. Performs other related functions as apparent or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED; and
Technical training or degree in heavy equipment and truck mechanic
A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a heavy equipment and truck mechanic
Licensed to conduct commercial vehicle inspections
Possess or ability to obtain MN Boiler Engineer License within three (3) months of hire.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential duties

Preferred Qualifications:

ASE certification preferred.

Pay: $31.56 - $41.66 per hour
