Full Job Description

1. Provides a variety of paralegal services to service ATTORNEY staff. Typical assignments:

Works under the direction of ATTORNEYs. Following established guidelines, gathers, prepares, analyzes, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in preparation for interviews; to assist with drafting briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents; and to facilitate discussions and negotiations with opposing counsel. Summarizes depositions and other transcripts; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks, and controls exhibits and other materials at depositions and trial.
Provides technical assistance to attorneys with incoming documents and electronically stored information (ESI), including processing documents and ESI in preparation for uploading to e-discovery platforms and document review systems; as well as uploading such ESI to e-discovery platforms and document review systems.
Assists with the organization, tagging and coding of ESI that has been uploaded to e-discovery platforms and document review systems.
Handles intake of documents and ESI, including logging incoming documents and ESI, checking to ensure they are accessible and in the proper format, and working with the producing party if any issues arise.
Provides assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently uploading exhibits to Trial Director (or similar trial application), compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists.
Using original and online legal resources, verifies citations and statutory references contained in legal documents. Ensures citations are complete and consistent with source material.
Develops tables of contents, table of authorities, and indices to briefs in accordance with established format. Lists cited cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs.
Composes original letters that do not require legal interpretations but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants.

2. Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. For example, assignments may include integrating output from different software types, e.g., tables produced by database applications and charts and graphs produced by electronic spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desk top publishing text. Products include complicated tables, graphs and charts which may be incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations. Ensures proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

3. Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations. Utilizes various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters. Prepares documents, charts, and visual materials for use in trials. Provides technical support e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma/GED or higher
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Proficiency in Automated Litigation Support (ALS) software applications
Ability to make responsible decisions on short notice and adapt to unexpected developments
U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain adjudication for the requisite background investigation
Physically located within the general geographic commuting radius of the USAO office

SKILLS

A well-qualified candidate should have experience in the following areas; preparing discovery requests(interrogatories, production of documents), preparing responses to discovery requests, drafting subpoenas, maintaining and organizing the case file, preparing simple pleadings, filing pleadings, reviewing documents for facts/information pertaining to substantive issues, organizing large document productions including preparing detailed inventory of documents, maintaining the ATTORNEYs calendar for filing deadlines, preparing for depositions (including pulling, organizing and preparing exhibits), preparing deposition summaries, preparing timelines, preparing trial notebooks, preparing questions and documents for use in depositions, preparing exhibits for use at trial, knowledge of Westlaw, Lexis, Casemap, and other applicable software programs, uploading documents to a document review platform, reviewing and tagging documents on a document review platform, preparing documents for production, and tracking both incoming and outgoing documents. A qualified candidate for consideration would also have experience in larger civil cases and significant work experience in traditional legal offices (firms and federal agencies).

Ability to pass a government background and credit check along with fingerprinting.

Must be US Citizen or Green Card Holder.
