Full Job Description

Overview

A well-established real estate development and property management organization is seeking a Real Estate Portfolio Accountant to join its accounting team. This position is responsible for maintaining general ledger accounts and overseeing financial transactions for an assigned portfolio of residential properties.

Primary Responsibilities

Property Accounting

Maintain financial records for a portfolio of residential properties.
Perform monthly reconciliations of tenant security deposit accounts.
Complete month-end close processes, including bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, journal entries, and budget-to-actual variance analysis.
Prepare year-end financial statements and supporting schedules for tax preparation.
Research and respond to accounting and financial inquiries as needed.
Account for capital improvement projects.
Collaborate with accounting leadership, property management teams, and other departments to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Serve as a resource to team members regarding accounting and property management matters.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Accounts Receivable

Partner with on-site property teams to obtain lease compliance documentation and other required tenant information.
Communicate with tenants and property teams to resolve payment discrepancies and inquiries.
Calculate and prepare tenant renewal documentation.
Monitor and support timely collection of tenant payments.
Coordinate legal filings with outside counsel when necessary.
Complete final account reconciliations and prepare move-out disposition correspondence and supporting documentation.

Accounts Payable

Review vendor invoices for accuracy, coding, and approval requirements.
Process vendor invoices according to due dates and cash flow considerations.
Manage vendor relationships and resolve payment-related issues.
Review and approve utility/submeter billing as needed.

Qualifications

Education

Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

1-3 years of real estate, property management, or related accounting experience.

Knowledge & Skills

Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including GAAP.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including functions such as VLOOKUP and SUMIF.
Experience with accounting software; property management/accounting software experience is a plus.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
