*Part-time (min of 24 hours/week, pro-rated) will be considered

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Comptroller is responsible for the overall financial management, accounting operations, and fiscal integrity of the organization. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Comptroller oversees day-to-day accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, internal controls, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance.

The Comptroller serves as a strategic financial partner to Executive Director, Board of Directors, and department leaders, supporting sound decision-making while ensuring the organization's financial resources are managed responsibly in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards and best practices.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Leadership

Manage all day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Develop financial reports, dashboards, and analyses for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Monitor organizational cash flow and liquidity.
Oversee annual budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with department leaders.
Identify financial trends and provide recommendations to improve operational efficiency and long-term financial performance.

Accounting & Compliance

Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and general ledger.
Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Maintain the organization's chart of accounts and accounting records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Monitor cash flow, banking relationships, and investment activity.
Reconcile all balance sheet accounts and ensure financial accuracy.
Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds to ensure proper accounting and reporting.
Maintain compliance with donor restrictions and nonprofit accounting standards.

Budgeting & Financial Planning

Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department directors and the Executive Director.
Monitor budget performance and prepare variance analyses.
Develop financial forecasts and long-range financial projections.
Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic initiatives.

Board & Executive Support

Prepare financial reports and presentations for Finance Committee and Board meetings.
Present financial information in a clear, understandable manner to non-financial stakeholders.
Support the Executive Director with financial modeling and organizational planning.
Process payroll in partnership with Human Resources.
Manage banking relationships and investment accounts.
Assist with policy development and implementation related to financial management.

Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of McKee

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; master’s degree preferred.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in good standing.
Minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including nonprofit accounting.
Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.
Experience preparing financial statements, managing audits, and coordinating IRS Form 990 preparation.
Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and internal controls.
Experience with Financial Edge accounting software is a huge plus.
Experience in nonprofit, museum, botanical garden, cultural institution, or similar mission-driven organization.
Experience with grant accounting and donor-restricted funds.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role works in a professional office setting with routine use of standard office equipment (computers, phones, printers) which may involve long periods of sitting, walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 20 pounds. Occasional attendance at Board meetings, committee meetings, fundraising events, and Garden programs outside normal business hours may be required. Outdoor and evening/weekend responsibilities during special events include exposure to heat, sun, and inclement weather.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
