Job Title: Director of Nursing (DON)

Location: Fort Collins, Colorado

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Nursing to lead our nursing department at our skilled nursing facility in Fort Collins. The DON will serve as a strong, visionary leader responsible for overseeing all clinical operations and results, ensuring the highest standards of resident care, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. This role requires a well-organized professional with deep expertise in clinical processes and a clear understanding of the balance between clinical excellence and financial responsibilities, including budgeting, reimbursement (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid), and resource allocation to support sustainable high-quality care.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who can drive positive clinical outcomes while managing the fiscal realities of skilled nursing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strong leadership to the nursing team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement to achieve superior clinical results and resident satisfaction.
Oversee all aspects of clinical care delivery, including resident assessments, care planning, MDS processes, infection control, wound care, and quality assurance programs to ensure optimal clinical outcomes.
Demonstrate exceptional organization and in-depth knowledge of clinical processes, developing, implementing, and monitoring policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with federal (CMS), state (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment), and facility standards.
Balance clinical and financial obligations by managing the nursing department budget, monitoring staffing productivity, overseeing payroll, supply utilization, and reimbursement strategies to support financial viability without compromising care quality.
Lead quality improvement initiatives, analyze clinical data and performance metrics, and implement corrective actions to maintain or exceed regulatory compliance and quality benchmarks (e.g., CMS Five-Star ratings, survey readiness).
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs), including recruitment, hiring, orientation, scheduling, performance management, and professional development.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (physicians, therapists, social services, dietary, administration) to coordinate comprehensive resident care and resolve operational challenges.
Ensure 24/7 nursing coverage, regulatory compliance, and preparedness for state/federal surveys.
Serve as a key liaison with residents, families, regulatory agencies, and external partners.
Participate in facility leadership meetings and contribute to overall strategic planning.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education: Must be a registered nurse in the state of Colorado.
Licensure/Certification: Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Colorado (or compact license with ability to obtain Colorado licensure).
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of progressive nursing experience, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role in a skilled nursing facility, long-term care, or post-acute setting.
Proven track record of leading clinical teams to achieve strong quality outcomes and regulatory compliance.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong leadership presence with the ability to inspire and guide teams toward excellence.
Highly organized with expertise in clinical processes, documentation, and regulatory requirements.
Solid understanding of both clinical care delivery and financial aspects of skilled nursing, including budgeting, cost control, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, and resource management.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and quality data analysis.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure under pressure.
