Full Job Description

Job Title: HVAC Crew Leader

Reports to: Maintenance, Environmental and Safety Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The HVAC Crew Leader directs, supervises, coordinates, and performs districtwide maintenance, repair, inspection, and operational oversight of HVAC systems and controls to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient building operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Required – Associate Degree in Heating/Air Conditioning, DDC Controls, or equivalent work experience and training
Experience:
Required – Five (5) years of HVAC experience including troubleshooting boilers, pneumatics, and controls systems and Two (2) years supervising/directing staff
Preferred – Experience with districtwide or multi‑facility HVAC operations
Certifications:
Valid WI driver’s license and district‑approved driving record
Ability to pass medical exam for respiratory equipment
Third Class ASOPE Power Plant license or equivalent
Language:
Required – English

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Supervise and coordinate districtwide HVAC maintenance and repair operations.

· Respond to HVAC emergencies during and after normal working hours and coordinate corrective action.

· Assign, prioritize, and monitor HVAC work orders to ensure timely completion.

· Direct and perform preventive maintenance programs, diagnose and repair District’s HVAC systems and controls.

· Manage building automation schedules, setpoints, alarms, and seasonal transitions; maintain, calibrate, and adjust temperature control equipment and systems.

· Requisition, order, and procure materials, parts, and equipment needed for HVAC repairs and installations; meet contractors on site, verify work, and ensure compliance with district standards.

· Maintain accurate service logs, PM records, and equipment documentation.

· Provide on‑the‑job training and guidance to HVAC mechanics and Head Custodians.

· Conduct regular inspections to identify needed repairs and prevent breakdowns or major overhauls.

· Maintain effective working relationships with staff, administrators, and vendors.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

· Knowledge of HVAC system operation, maintenance, and repair.

· Working knowledge of automated building operating systems (e.g., Metasys, INet, Tridium, Niagara) and all District utilized software (workorder system, inventory tracking, word processing, spreadsheets etc.).

· Ability to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot all components of Districts HVAC systems.

· Ability to troubleshoot and repair pneumatic control systems.

· Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, and manufacturer specifications.

· Familiarity with boiler chemical treatment, water testing, and analysis.

· Ability to safely use materials, hand tools, power tools, and HVAC‑related equipment.

· Familiar with, have a working knowledge of and comply with all national, state, and local air quality and mechanical codes to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all personnel, and enforce safety procedures including lockout/tagout, hot work, respirator compliance, chemical handling, and safe operation of mechanical spaces.

· Ability to apply advanced diagnostic reasoning, adapt to evolving HVAC technologies, and integrate new systems or equipment into existing infrastructure.

· Ability to effectively lead and maintain harmonious working relationships and follow supervisory direction.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift 75 pounds without assistance; move freely throughout mechanical spaces; work in extreme heat and cold; must be able and capable of working from ladders, scaffolding, and high-life equipment; regularly required to communicate and exchange accurate information with administration, staff, and the public.
