Construction MEP Superintendent Responsibilities:
The Construction MEP Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection field operations on assigned commercial construction projects. This position serves as the primary field leader for MEP activities, ensuring all systems are installed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, specifications, and quality standards.
The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, communication, technical expertise, and the ability to coordinate multiple trades while maintaining strong relationships with project teams, owners, engineers, architects, and subcontractors.
Field Operations & Project Execution
- Lead and manage all day-to-day MEP field operations throughout the duration of assigned construction projects.
- Coordinate mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and specialty systems with the overall construction schedule.
- Develop and maintain detailed short-term and long-term work plans to support project milestones.
- Supervise and coordinate MEP subcontractors to ensure productivity, quality workmanship, and schedule compliance.
- Identify potential conflicts between building systems and proactively coordinate resolutions before installation.
- Conduct daily field inspections to monitor progress, identify deficiencies, and maintain project momentum.
- Collaborate closely with general superintendents and project managers to ensure seamless integration between structural, architectural, and MEP scopes.
MEP Coordination & Quality Control
- Ensure all MEP installations comply with project plans, specifications, manufacturer recommendations, applicable building codes, and industry standards.
- Coordinate shop drawing reviews, BIM coordination meetings, clash detection, and installation sequencing.
- Verify equipment locations, system routing, and utility connections prior to installation.
- Oversee testing, balancing, startup, commissioning, and system turnover activities.
- Coordinate inspections with local authorities, engineers, commissioning agents, and project stakeholders.
- Ensure all deficiencies are corrected promptly and quality expectations are consistently achieved.
Safety Leadership
- Promote a strong culture of safety across all MEP activities.
- Conduct regular safety meetings, toolbox talks, inspections, and jobsite audits.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and project-specific safety requirements.
- Monitor subcontractor safety performance and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Investigate incidents and contribute to continuous improvement of jobsite safety programs.
Project Administration & Client Relations
- Maintain daily reports, project documentation, manpower tracking, progress updates, and quality records.
- Participate in owner meetings, subcontractor coordination meetings, scheduling sessions, and project reviews.
- Assist with labor forecasting, productivity tracking, change order implementation, and schedule updates.
- Support procurement planning by coordinating equipment deliveries and long-lead material schedules.
- Assist with project closeout activities, punch list completion, commissioning documentation, and owner turnover.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to assistant superintendents, field engineers, and trade partners.
- Foster a collaborative, professional, and solutions-oriented project environment.
- Hold subcontractors accountable for schedule, quality, productivity, and safety expectations.
- Promote continuous improvement and operational excellence throughout project execution.
Construction MEP Superintendent Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent field experience).
- Minimum 8-10 years of progressive commercial construction experience with at least 4 years in an MEP Superintendent, Superintendent, or field leadership role.
- Extensive experience managing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems on large commercial construction projects.
- Experience coordinating MEP trades using BIM and clash detection software.
- Advanced knowledge of construction sequencing, scheduling, quality control, commissioning, and startup procedures.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and equipment submittals.
- OSHA 30 Certification required.
Experience with Procore, Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, BIM coordination platforms, and construction management software preferred.
