Shenandoah County is inviting applications for the position of

Assistant Commonwealth Attorney I

within the Shenandoah County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Overview:

The Shenandoah County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office seeks one attorney to join their team. Most importantly, the candidate must exhibit high moral character, be oriented to working as a part of a team and be committed to a service-oriented mindset.

The candidate will be responsible for preparing and handling assigned general district court dockets, including the Juvenile and Domestic Relations docket. The position will also be responsible for handling assigned felony cases. This entails researching case law related to the issues of their cases, working closely with law enforcement, communicating with victims, witnesses, and other professionals involved in their cases, and attending trainings as recommended and required for continuing legal education. Additionally, the candidate will check and review a variety of files and data for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to established standards and procedures. The candidate will exhibit a willingness to grow both professionally and in skill level. This entry-level position will be mentored by a senior member of this office and will work at the pleasure of the Shenandoah County Commonwealth's Attorney. This position will also undertake special projects as assigned by a supervisor.

Qualifications:

Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Virginia, in good standing with the Virginia Bar
Graduation from an accredited law school with an LLB or JD degree
Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record
Successfully complete a criminal background check

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of criminal law and court room etiquette.
Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment and techniques.
Knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic.
Knowledge of the organization and functions of the department and of general administrative policies and practices.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs
Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing in a highly interactive team-oriented work environment.
Skill in legal research and writing.
Ability to display high moral character; be team oriented, and be committed to a service-oriented mind set.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to keep office records and to prepare accurate reports from file sources.
Ability to perform and work independently.
Ability to grow professionally and in skill level.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance at work.

Physical Demands:

This is mostly sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.

Anticipated Entry Level Salary: $71,000-$92,281.
