Position Summary
The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer (AM Specialist Level 3/4) supports MIMO's advanced manufacturing operations, customer and program engineering support, quotation and CAM support, technical documentation, manufacturing readiness activities, and project execution. This role is intended for a mid-career engineer with strong technical fundamentals, practical CAD/CAM aptitude, and hands-on experience in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing and laser welding for aerospace, defense, commercial, and government customers.
Unlike our entry-level AM Solution Engineer role, this position is expected to operate with significant independence, exercise sound technical judgment on complex and ambiguous problems, take ownership of equipment performance and manufacturing readiness outcomes, and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers. The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer works cross-functionally with Engineering, Materials & Processes, Production, Quality, Supply Chain, Business Development, and Program Management to convert customer requirements into manufacturable, correctly scoped, and technically credible advanced manufacturing solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Equipment Performance and Technical Support
- Provide technical support for additive manufacturing and welding machines, including electrical, mechanical, cooling, and gas systems, to ensure equipment operates at optimal efficiency and productivity.
- Collaborate with engineering and operations personnel to ensure successful equipment installation, start-up, and ongoing maintenance.
- Engage, teach, and train company personnel on system use for equipment and peripheral machines, serving as a technical resource across the floor.
2. Additive Manufacturing Solution Development
- Lead DfAM/DFM reviews, build orientation, support strategy, material and process fit, post-processing assumptions, inspection feasibility, and manufacturing constraints.
- Escalate technical, cost, schedule, and manufacturability risks to the appropriate engineering, quality, production, or program lead, and drive resolution on complex or cross-functional issues.
- Own the development of manufacturable additive manufacturing solutions for customer parts, assemblies, prototypes, production hardware, qualification builds, and program deliverables.
- Review customer drawings, CAD models, specifications, technical data packages, and statements of work to identify requirements, assumptions, missing information, and technical risks.
3. Customer and Program Engineering Support
- Lead customer, program, and internal engineering activities by translating customer requirements into clear internal technical inputs, build-preparation requirements, inspection needs, and production-readiness actions.
- Represent MIMO in customer technical discussions, quote reviews, design reviews, and program execution meetings.
- Prepare and review technical questions, assumptions, exceptions, clarifications, meeting notes, action items, and decision records.
- Coordinate with Program Management to support schedule tracking, deliverable status, and customer reporting.
4. Manufacturing Readiness
- Own engineering-to-production handoff and manufacturing readiness for additive manufacturing jobs and programs.
- Lead build-prep instructions, router/traveler inputs, material requirements, inspection requirements, post-processing steps, tooling or fixture needs, witness coupon planning, outside processing assumptions, and data-package requirements.
- Drive quote-to-build handoffs, contract review inputs, readiness reviews, production kickoffs, build-risk reviews, KPI reviews, and lessons-learned activities to reduce production risk and improve repeatability.
5. Proposal, Grant, and Principal Investigator Responsibilities
- Review solicitations, project calls, statements of objectives, and technical instructions to determine fit, requirements, compliance needs, deliverables, evaluation criteria, and proposal risks (e.g., SBIR, STTR, NSF, DOE, America Makes, DoD, prime-contractor, and other government or commercial solicitations).
- Develop technical solution concepts that align MIMO's additive manufacturing capabilities with sponsor objectives, customer mission needs, manufacturing readiness goals, qualification requirements, and transition pathways.
- Build proposal compliance matrices, proposal outlines, writing assignments, review schedules, action trackers, and final technical response packages.
- Serve as Company-appointed Principal Investigator or Technical Lead when authorized, including responsibility for technical execution, sponsor communication, milestone tracking, deliverable quality, technical reporting, risk management, and project closeout.
6. Mentorship and Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to AM Solution Engineers and other junior engineering staff.
- Review and validate the technical work of junior team members on quotes, build preparation, and documentation as needed.
- Contribute to the development of internal training, standard work, and best practices for the broader engineering team.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Welding Technology, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of full-time professional experience in additive manufacturing, manufacturing engineering, applications engineering, or related technical work, with demonstrated increasing scope of ownership and responsibility.
- Practical, hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting experience with industrial equipment.
- Hands-on experience with metal Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing technology.
- Hands-on experience with welding and automation systems in manufacturing plants.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
- Computer hardware/software set-up experience.
- CAD/CAM software experience (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Autodesk Fusion, Materialise Magics, Netfabb, nTopology, Mastercam, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T fundamentals, material specifications, and inspection requirements.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and technical writing skills, with the ability to represent MIMO to customers and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and manage multiple priorities under pressure in a fast-paced small-business environment.
- Ability to travel if requested.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Engineering, Sciences, or Physics.
- Experience serving as a Principal Investigator or Technical Lead on government or commercial programs (SBIR/STTR, DoD, America Makes, or similar).
- Experience mentoring or providing technical oversight to junior engineers.
- Exposure to aerospace, defense, automotive, motorsport, robotics, space, or other regulated manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, ITAR, configuration management, document control, or manufacturing quality systems.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Work in both office and manufacturing environments.
- Occasionally enter production areas where additive manufacturing equipment, powder-handling areas, post-processing equipment, machining, inspection equipment, and industrial operations may be present.
- Follow all safety, PPE, housekeeping, ITAR/export-control, and quality-system requirements.
- May occasionally lift or move lightweight parts, build plates, samples, tools, or documentation packages within Company safety limits.
- May support customer visits, supplier visits, trade events, government/program reviews, or technical meetings as assigned.
