Through our flagship brand, CAKE, we combine science, innovation, and operational excellence to create cutting-edge formulations while maintaining the highest standards of regulatory compliance, product safety, and manufacturing quality.

We're looking for a highly motivated Formulation Specialist to join our Research & Development team and play a key role in developing next-generation cannabis products.

Position Summary

The Formulation Specialist is responsible for researching, developing, optimizing, and scaling cannabis formulations across multiple product categories, including vape cartridges, concentrates, infused pre-rolls, and future product innovations. This individual will work closely with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Compliance, and Operations to ensure formulations are stable, scalable, compliant, and commercially viable.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong scientific background in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related discipline, combined with experience in formulation development, laboratory practices, and manufacturing processes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Develop new cannabis formulations from concept through commercialization.
Optimize existing formulations to improve quality, consistency, potency, and manufacturing efficiency.
Research new cannabinoids, terpenes, ingredients, and technologies to support product innovation.
Conduct formulation trials and laboratory testing.
Evaluate ingredient compatibility, viscosity, stability, and shelf life.
Research & Product Development

Process Development

Scale laboratory formulations into commercial manufacturing processes.
Develop manufacturing procedures and process parameters.
Improve production efficiency through process optimization.
Support equipment validation and production startup activities.
Troubleshoot formulation and production issues.

Laboratory & Technical Responsibilities

Prepare formulation samples for testing and evaluation.
Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and technical documentation.
Analyze formulation data and prepare technical reports.
Assist with stability studies and product validation.
Ensure laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.

Quality & Compliance

Ensure all formulations comply with California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) regulations.
Support GMP and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
Assist with investigations related to product quality or manufacturing deviations.
Participate in corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities.
Maintain confidentiality of proprietary formulas and intellectual property.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with Manufacturing to ensure successful production implementation.
Collaborate with Quality Assurance on product specifications and validation.
Support Marketing and Sales with technical product information.
Work closely with suppliers to evaluate raw materials and new ingredients.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in one of the following:
Chemical Engineering
Chemistry
Biochemistry
Pharmaceutical Sciences
Food Science
Chemical Biology
Related scientific discipline
3+ years of formulation, product development, laboratory, or process engineering experience.
Strong understanding of:
Formulation chemistry
Laboratory techniques
Process development
Stability testing
Manufacturing scale-up

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related field.
Cannabis industry formulation experience.
Experience with vape formulations, concentrates, or infused products.
Experience in GMP, pharmaceutical, food manufacturing, cosmetics, or consumer packaged goods (CPG).
Knowledge of analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, or related laboratory equipment.
Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and process validation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong scientific and analytical problem-solving skills.
Excellent understanding of chemical interactions and formulation principles.
Ability to interpret technical data and laboratory results.
Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
High attention to detail and commitment to product quality.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in both laboratory and manufacturing environments.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 40 pounds.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Manual dexterity sufficient to handle laboratory equipment and small-volume measurements.
