Laguna College of Art + Design is seeking a full-time experienced Assistant Professor of Illustration. The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Development, Illustration, and Entertainment Design.
Position Summary:
The Assistant Professor of Illustration will teach classes across the illustration department, at all undergraduate levels. They will have a proven, noted, and currently active publication record engaging with the varying industries and disciplines that Illustration interacts with. They will provide support and assistance to the Department Chair and will play an integral role in campus life while balancing a full-time teaching load and their own professional projects. Successful candidates are enthusiastic about contemporary illustration and interested in recruiting, retention, developing professional contacts, and plugging those contacts into the department. A terminal degree is preferred, but candidates with commensurate professional experience are encouraged to apply.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to teach a wide range of Illustration classes at all undergraduate levels. Maintain the ability to adapt and plug their artistic sensibilities into a range of classes that cover multiple outcomes, skillsets, and illustrative pathways.
- Regular and active attendance at department and college level meetings, events, and exhibitions on and off campus, in the evening, and on occasional weekend dates.
- Maintain a record of publication. Remain active and engaged as a professional illustrator to provide relevant contextual industry knowledge to our student body and faculty.
- Support recruitment and retention efforts of the department. Including regular attendance at events such as National Portfolio Day and Lightbox Expo.
- Provide support in assessment and evaluation of curriculum to the Department Chair.
- Provide support and assistance to the Department Chair in regular and ongoing student assessment efforts.
- Attend, facilitate and organize industry events, field trips, and on and off campus department events.
- Work collaboratively with the Department Chair to develop curriculum, new classes, and initiatives for the department.
- Ability to delegate and lead Illustration student workers and our Risograph Technicians. Assist with the maintaining and upkeep of department equipment such as the Risograph Printer and Illustration Department book making equipment.
- Maintain a professional network that is relevant to Illustration and meaningfully utilize that network to further enhance the experience of our students and the Department.

Position Requirements, Experience, and Education:

Education
Master’s Degree in Illustration (or related field) or commensurate education and experience. Noted, consistent, and current publishing record across the industries that intersect with the field of illustration preferred.
Experience
- A noted history of publication (3-5 years minimum of relevant, active professional experience required). The full-time faculty in Illustration should remain active and engaged as a professional illustrator to provide relevant contextual industry knowledge to our student body and faculty.
- 3 years of full-time teaching or equivalent hours taught at an accredited or equivalent postsecondary institution, or comparable relevant professional experience required.
Supervisory Responsibility
The full-time faculty in Illustration will work with our Department Student workers as well as our Risograph Technicians.
Position Requirements
- Advanced proficiency and mastery within the Adobe Creative Suite software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. Interest in researching emerging technologies and software that are relevant to the field of illustration, art, and design.
- Advanced proficiency within Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Advanced proficiency within Google Suite: Gmail, Calendar
- Demonstrated effectiveness as a culturally competent professional with broad experience interacting with and supporting the needs of a diverse student population and/or staff and faculty required.
- Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team required.
- Excellent organizational skills required.
- Must be self-motivated, focused, and proactive.
- Excellent spelling, grammar, and editing skills required.
- Must have the ability to multi-task and work in fast-paced, demanding environment.
- Experience in higher education preferred.
- Must be able to drive personal vehicle for business purposes and must pass DMV background check and have minimum insurance requirements as set by LCAD.
This individual will also be able to perform the following essential functions:

Physical Essential Functions:
Sitting, typing, and moving from one place to another. This position takes place indoors in an office environment sitting at a desk and working in front of a computer. Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
Classification and Status:
This is an exempt, full-time faculty position.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $71,000.00 – $78,280.00 per year
The posted salary range reflects the College’s anticipated hiring salary range, but the final salary range is subject to negotiation and additional factors, such as the candidate’s background, experience, and alignment with institutional needs.
Background Check:
This individual will be required to undergo a job-related background check, inclusive of employment and education verification. Some positions may require successful completion of a post-offer agility test. Employment is contingent on satisfactory results of the aforementioned, in addition to compliance with requirements cited in this job description.
