Full Job Description

We are seeking a licensed Illinois Structural Engineer (SE) to join our team on a fully remote basis. This is not a market-entry hire — we have Illinois projects on the books today that need an SE seal, plus a pipeline of work in other states for an engineer who holds or is willing to pursue additional licensure.

You will serve as Structural Engineer of Record on a genuinely varied portfolio: one month a luxury residence with an exposed steel and glass problem, the next a high-rise lateral system. If you like range and you like owning the outcome, this is the seat.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as Structural Engineer of Record on Illinois projects; design, review, seal, and stamp structural drawings and calculations in accordance with the Illinois Structural Engineering Licensing Act.
Perform structural analysis and design across steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, masonry, cold-formed steel, and wood-framed structures.
Design gravity and lateral systems for both low-rise and high-rise construction, including wind and seismic load path development and detailing.
Value engineer structural systems — we optimize on most of our projects, and we expect our engineers to bring cost-efficient alternates to the table rather than defaulting to the conservative section.
Produce and coordinate structural construction documents from schematic design through permit and IFC sets.
Conduct existing-structure investigations, condition assessments, and capacity evaluations for renovation, adaptive reuse, and change-of-occupancy work.
Coordinate directly with architects, civil and MEP consultants, owners, and contractors to resolve constructability and cost issues early.
Respond to plan review comments and correspond with Illinois AHJs, including the City of Chicago Department of Buildings.
Review shop drawings and submittals, answer RFIs, and provide construction administration and site observation as needed.
Support fee proposals and scoping for new work as the portfolio grows.

Required Qualifications

Active Illinois Structural Engineer (SE) license in good standing — this is a hard requirement for the position.
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Master's in Structural Engineering preferred.
Minimum 5 years of professional structural design experience, including demonstrated experience sealing drawings as Engineer of Record.
Experience across multiple building types and materials — we are looking for range, not a single-sector specialist.
Working command of IBC, ASCE 7, AISC 360 and 341, ACI 318, TMS 402/602, AWC NDS, and the Chicago Building Code.
Proficiency with structural analysis and design software — ETABS, RAM, RISA, SAP2000, Enercalc, or equivalent.
Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit and BIM coordination experience strongly preferred.
Meticulous attention to detail. Our sets get reviewed closely and our clients notice.
Ability to work independently in a remote, fast-moving environment and hold your own deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional PE or SE licensure in other states, or an active NCEES Record for comity licensure — we have work in ten-plus states and will support you in expanding your credentials.
High-rise experience, including podium construction, transfer systems, and post-tensioned slabs.
Luxury and custom residential experience, particularly long spans, cantilevers, and architecturally exposed structural steel.
Adaptive reuse, retrofit, shoring, and underpinning design experience.
Strong grasp of means and methods and construction cost drivers.
Familiarity with SEAOI and the Illinois consultant and contractor community.
