Job Summary
The Injection Mold Operator sets up and operates automatic or semi-automatic injection molding machines to cast thermoplastic materials into plastic or rubber products. Reads and interprets blueprints and diagrams to select, position, and secure machinery. Responsible for primary set-up of production jobs by installing tooling, troubleshooting and adjusting molding parameters to maintain quality and maximum product output. Performs mold and color changes and general maintenance to machinery, conveyors, and auxiliary equipment. Loads materials into hopper of molding machine. Observes and adjusts gauges to ensure specified molding temperature and pressure are maintained. Inspects molded products as needed. The position performs a vital role in enhancing the Company’s infrastructure and has the capability to contribute to the strength and sustainable growth of Blue-White Industries.

Essential Job Functions

- Install dies and adjust workpiece fixturing on machine, using hand tools
- Select and install blades, tools, or other attachments as required for each operation
- Set machine controls to regulate molding temperature, volume of plastic, molding pressure and time, and proper alignment, and speed and feed rates, and set cycle times
- Preheat tools, dies, plastic materials, or patterns as required
- Function may require to mix, measure, or weigh plastic powder compounds.
- Observe machine instrumentation to verify and record proper temperatures, pressures, and press-cycle times, and adjust as necessary
- Continuously monitor machine operation to detect jams or malfunctions
- Unload finished products, and allow to cool after processing to prevent distortion
- Remove finished or cured products from dies or molds, using hand tools, air hoses, and other equipment, stamping identifying information on products when necessary
- Trim excess material from parts, using knives, and perform any secondary operations required
- Visually inspect parts for defects; and measure using precision instruments to ensure adherence to precise specifications
- Count or weigh random samples of molded part using electronic scales to verify prescribed amounts of material in finished product to ensure specifications
- Remove parts such as dies from machines after production runs are finished
- Grind scrap plastic into powder for reuse
- Inventory and record quantities of materials and finished products, requisitioning additional supplies as necessary to maintain adequate inventories of materials
- Perform maintenance work such as cleaning and oiling machines, repairing or replacing damaged molds or other equipment, using hand or power tools as required
- Follow prescribed safety regulations

Experience/Training/Education
- High School graduate or GED
- Minimum 1 year experience in Injection Molding or related work
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Must be able to understand and follow oral and written directions
- Good verbal communications skills
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow samples, basic blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, lists of materials, and other written instructions or procedures
- Requires good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to align and work with dies and small parts and adjust machine settings
- Prior experience in injection molding
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
- High attention to detail and self-motivation skills
- Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve a problem and avoid repeating mistakes
- Self-directed, with good sense of time management and “get it done” mindset
- Ability to organize and maintain work station, and control work flow
- Able to draw on diplomatic communication skills
- Machinery or instrumentation manufacturing industry-related experience is a plus
- Requires minimal supervision

Technical: Good understanding of injection molding machine set-up, operation and workflow. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks. Attention to detail is critical. Must develop and retain in-depth knowledge to quickly identify dies and fixtures, their associated numbers and nomenclature, and how to set-up and calibrate each for optimum performance. Ability to select and proficiently use a variety of hand tools. Ability to recognize visually recognize defective or questionable parts, and separate for recycling the material.
Communication: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, as well as drawings, exploded view diagrams, blueprints, and part and materials lists. Ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively present information in one-on-one situations to co-workers, managers and other employees of the organization.
Math & Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Physical and Environmental Elements
Physical Demands: Ability to stand in one place or move about continuously for up to 3/4 or more of normal work shift. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and to reach with hands and arms frequently. Ability to talk and to hear continuously. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds frequently, and 50 pounds occasionally, and to operate hand tools and electric-powered equipment frequently throughout the day. Finger dexterity to hold, position and secure dies, machine parts and connections quickly and accurately is required frequently for the entire duration of the normal work shift. Ability to clearly see details at close range (20 inches or less), at a distance (clear vision at 20 feet or more), ability to identify and distinguish colors, ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships, and ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
Work Environment: Employee works in a non-air conditioned Manufacturing environment with moderate to high noise levels from air and electrically-operated machinery and equipment, and some variation in temperature due to external weather conditions. May be occasionally briefly exposed to chemical vapors from parts cleaning, forklifts or other sources during the workday.
Special Requirements
May be required to work weekends and holidays as business necessitates; schedules will be determined by the department supervisor/management with at least 48 hours in advance notice.
