Full Job Description

Planner / Buyer (Distribution)
Pay: $75,000 - $100,000
Location: Elgin, IL
Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8 am-5 pm

Job Summary

The Buyer/Planner is responsible for managing inventory and purchasing activities that support efficient distribution and production operations. This role plays a key part in optimizing working capital through hands-on purchasing, inventory control, and process improvement. Working closely with inventory leadership and cross-functional teams, the Buyer/Planner applies best-practice inventory processes to meet internal operational needs while ensuring customer expectations are met. Strong analytical skills, effective process management, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Manage inventory levels to align with established procurement metrics and operational demand.
Review, analyze, and administer inventory in collaboration with warehouse and accounting teams.
Execute end-to-end purchase order lifecycle management, including follow-up on late or outstanding orders.
Communicate order status updates and inventory issues to internal stakeholders.
Resolve backorders and perform general item and inventory maintenance.
Coordinate the flow of materials and products across the supply chain by working with internal departments.
Purchase and manage inventory across multiple categories and locations.
Build and maintain effective relationships with vendors and distribution partners.
Collaborate with strategic sourcing and category management teams on vendor issues, changes, and new product opportunities.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, with advanced skills in Excel.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
Working knowledge of distribution, transportation, and supply chain operations.
Experience expediting priority orders and managing vendor or logistics challenges.
Proven ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.

Education and Experience

Experience Requirements:

3–5 years of experience managing inventory using analytical and statistical methods.
Distribution or supply chain experience preferred.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business, finance, or a related field preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and 3–5 years of relevant industry experience will be considered.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds as needed.
Must be able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
