Full Job Description

Quality Manager

Location: Elgin, IL
Department: Quality Assurance & Food Safety
Reports To: Business Development Manager

Compensation: $90,000-$120,000 depending on experience and skillset

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Quality Manager to lead all aspects of Quality Assurance, Food Safety, and Regulatory Compliance for our food manufacturing facility. This individual will be responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving quality systems that ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and company requirements.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in food blending, powdered ingredient manufacturing, nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, and/ or functional food production and has successfully built or transformed quality programs from the ground up. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a proactive, floor-focused manager who can drive accountability, develop team members, and partner closely with Operations to achieve world-class quality and food safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Quality & Food Safety Leadership

Lead and manage all plant Quality Assurance and Food Safety activities.
Develop, implement, and maintain robust Quality Management Systems.
Ensure compliance with FDA, USDA, GMP, cGMP, HACCP, FSMA, NSF, SQF, BRC, and customer requirements as applicable.
Oversee quality control processes for raw materials, blending operations, work-in-process, packaging, and finished goods.
Establish and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to quality, food safety, complaints, deviations, and corrective actions.
Drive a culture of quality and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Program Development & Continuous Improvement

Build and enhance quality systems, programs, and procedures from the ground up where needed.
Develop and implement SOPs, work instructions, training programs, and quality standards.
Lead root cause investigations and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) programs.
Identify process improvements that reduce defects, improve consistency, and enhance operational efficiency.
Implement risk assessment and preventive quality initiatives.

Regulatory & Customer Compliance

Serve as the primary quality representative during customer, regulatory, and third-party audits.
Manage audit preparation, execution, responses, and corrective action plans.
Ensure compliance with labeling, ingredient, allergen, traceability, and recall requirements.
Maintain all quality records, documentation, and certifications.

Team Leadership & Accountability

Lead, coach, develop, and hold accountable a team of quality professionals and technicians.
Establish clear expectations, performance metrics, and development plans for team members.
Foster a culture of ownership, urgency, and continuous improvement.
Partner with Production, Operations, Maintenance, Procurement, and R&D teams to proactively address quality concerns.
Conduct regular training and education programs on quality and food safety requirements.

Operations Support

Maintain a strong presence on the production floor and actively engage with employees.
Monitor blending, batching, ingredient handling, packaging, and sanitation practices.
Evaluate process controls and ensure consistent product quality.
Support new product introductions, process validations, and scale-up activities.
Lead investigations related to customer complaints, non-conforming products, and deviations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Microbiology, Chemistry, Quality Management, or related field.
5+ years of progressive quality leadership experience in food manufacturing.
3+ years of direct people management experience.
Experience in food blending, dry ingredient processing, powdered products, or ingredient manufacturing.
Experience in nutraceutical, dietary supplement, functional food, or cGMP-regulated manufacturing environments.
Demonstrated success developing or rebuilding quality systems and programs.
Strong knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, cGMPs, FSMA, FDA regulations, and food safety principles.
Experience leading customer, regulatory, and certification audits.
Proven ability to manage teams and drive accountability across departments.
Excellent problem-solving, root cause analysis, and decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications

SQF Practitioner certification.
HACCP Certification.
PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) certification.
Experience with ERP, quality management, and document control systems.
Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
Knowledge of allergen management, environmental monitoring, and supplier quality programs.

Reduce quality deviations, customer complaints, and product non-conformances.
Build a proactive quality culture that supports growth, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.
