Full Job Description

The Child/Family Advocate provides trauma-informed advocacy, support, and services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. The position assists families in establishing safety, addressing immediate and ongoing needs, accessing community resources, and moving toward safe and stable living environments.

The Child/Family Advocate provides case management, safety planning, referrals, follow-up services, and advocacy for clients and their children. The position also provides individual and group support, age-appropriate activities, educational assistance, and other services designed to promote children’s emotional well-being, healthy development, and resilience.

The Child/Family Advocate works closely with parents and caregivers, agency advocates, shelter staff, schools, and community partners to ensure that the needs of children and families are addressed. The position also assists with shelter operations, children’s programming, documentation and reporting, community outreach, and other agency responsibilities as assigned.

Child and Family Advocacy

· Conduct assessments with clients to identify immediate and ongoing needs.

· Assist clients in developing individualized goals and plans for safety, stability, and progress.

· Conduct intake or assessment with sheltered children and non-resident children as appropriate.

· Provide individual and group support services to children residing in shelter and participating in outreach services.

· Provide age-appropriate activities that promote healing, emotional expression, resilience, healthy development, and positive relationships.

· Observe and document children’s behaviors, needs, and progress while maintaining confidentiality.

· Communicate with parents and caregivers regarding children’s activities, behaviors, needs, and concerns.

· Advocate for the educational, medical, emotional, developmental, legal, and other identified needs of children and families.

· Conduct regular meetings with clients, as appropriate, to assess needs and monitor progress toward established goals.

· Provide follow-up and outreach services to clients and families as assigned.

· Track clients and follow-up services as required by agency programs or grants.

Children’s Programming

· Manage and support the agency’s children’s programs.

· Plan and conduct age-appropriate recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities.

· Organize and participate in activities and outings such as games, field trips, and other children’s programming.

· Provide homework assistance and educational support for school-aged children residing in shelter.

· Identify learning barriers and collaborate with parents, schools, and community partners to support academic success.

· Coordinate tutoring services or recruit volunteer tutors when additional educational assistance is needed.

· Maintain children’s play areas, toys, equipment, and activity materials in a clean, organized, and safe condition.

· Identify signs of emotional, developmental, or behavioral concerns and bring appropriate concerns to the attention of parents, caregivers, and the Client Services Manager.

Case Management and Community Collaboration

· Assist with individualized service plans and monitor progress toward identified goals.

· Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies for the benefit of clients and their children.

· Collaborate with agencies such as DFCS, Georgia Legal Services, courts, victim assistance programs, childcare providers, schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, and other community partners as appropriate.

· Participate in community presentations, health fairs, awareness events, and other outreach activities as directed and approved.

Shelter Support

· Assist with shelter coverage as needed.

· Serve as shelter staff when needed to ensure adequate coverage, including evenings, weekends, or holidays as assigned.

· Support shelter operations, crisis intervention, and resident needs.

· Transport clients and/or children in an agency vehicle when authorized and assigned.

Documentation, Reporting, and Administrative Responsibilities

· Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of client and children’s services in accordance with agency policies.

· Maintain confidentiality of all client and agency information.

· Gather and prepare monthly statistical information for required grants and programs as assigned in a timely manner.

· Assist with grant reporting, grant writing, and research as requested.

· Perform general administrative duties, including internal paperwork, record keeping, correspondence, scheduling, and telephone calls.

· Attend staff meetings, required training, and professional development activities.

· Maintain required certifications, including CPR and First Aid, as applicable.

Domestic Violence Task Force and Community Support

· Assist with Domestic Violence Task Force activities as assigned.

· Schedule meetings and maintain attendance and meeting records; prepare and distribute meeting notices, agendas, reminders, and follow-up communications.

· Assist with community awareness events and collaborative initiatives.

· Represent Glynn Community Crisis Center/Amity House in the community in a professional manner when participating in approved activities.
