About Friendship Center

Friendship Center is a compassionate adult day care program serving older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. For 50 years, we have provided dignified, relationship-centered care that supports both participants and their families.

Meals are an essential part of our program: supporting nutrition, routine, comfort, and community.

Job Summary

The Kitchen Lead is responsible for preparing, serving, and managing daily meals for 25–50 senior participants in an adult day care setting. This is a hands-on food service role focused on senior nutrition, food safety, kitchen sanitation, and accommodating special dietary needs common among older adults.

This position also supports food sustainability efforts through coordination with food banks and food recovery programs and may assist with occasional cooking demonstrations or food-related classes.

Essential Job Duties

Meal Preparation & Food Service
Prepare and serve daily continental breakfast, lunch (partially catered by outside vendor), and afternoon snack
Cook, plate, and portion meals according to senior nutrition guidelines
Prepare alternate meals and snacks for special diets and dietary restrictions
Ensure proper food temperatures are maintained (hot ≥140°F, cold ≤40°F)
Serve meals safely, respectfully, and on schedule

Food Safety & Kitchen Sanitation

Maintain daily food temperature logs and required documentation
Follow all safe food handling and sanitation standards
Establish and maintain a daily kitchen cleaning schedule
Wash dishes, utensils, tables, counters, floors, and kitchen equipment
Use and order appropriate disinfecting and cleaning supplies

Inventory & Food Program Coordination

Assist with food ordering and inventory control
Coordinate with food bank, food recovery, and produce rescue programs
Support emergency preparedness and backup food planning

Program & Team Support

Assist with food preparation for special events and celebrations
Collaborate with Program Manager and Marketing on specialty meals
Lead occasional cooking demonstrations or food-related classes for participants and caregivers
Assist with emergency drills as needed
Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent
Experience in food service, kitchen work, or meal preparation preferred
Experience working with seniors or in senior care settings preferred
Valid Food Handler’s Permit (or ability to obtain upon hire)
Reliable, punctual, and compassionate
Strong organizational and basic record-keeping skills

Enjoys working with older adults and seniors
Ability to problem-solve and adapt to daily program needs
Works well independently and as part of a team
Maintains confidentiality and professionalism
Flexible with changing schedules and program demands
