Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Staff Accountant supports the organization’s financial operations, including treasury functions, general accounting, and accounts payable/receivable. This role is ideal for an entry-level or mid-level accounting professional seeking hands-on experience in nonprofit finance and fund accounting.

Must have a deep, personal commitment to the mission and values of Unknown Nations.

Responsibilities

Perform electronic filing (e-filing) and maintain accurate organized financial and grant records.
Prepare wire transfer and ACH documentation for review and approval by authorized personnel.
Process routine accounting entries under supervision.
Perform AP and AR support tasks.
Assist with bank and general ledger account reconciliations.
Maintain documentation to support transparency, audits, and funder requirements.
Support month-end and year-end close activities as assigned.
Prepare journal entries and assist with month-end close.
Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
Maintain general ledger accuracy.
Assist in preparation of financial reports.
Support annual audit and 990 preparation.
Maintain proper documentation in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.

Qualifications

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (or in progress).
At least 1-3 years experience in accounting or bookkeeping.
Basic understanding of accounting principles (GAAP knowledge preferred).
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Ability to handle confidential financial information.
Experience or education in accounting, finance, or non-profit administration.
Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Proficiency in using or learning software applications such as Sage, Monday.com, and Virtuous.

Pay and Schedule

Commensurate with experience.
This is a salaried, exempt position.
40 hours a week. Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
Health, dental, and vision insurance (Employer pays 75%) with HSA, paid time off, paid holidays, short-term disability and life insurance, cell phone reimbursement, 401(k) match after 1 year.
