Full Job Description

Family Court of St. Louis County is hiring for a Deputy Juvenile Officer - Educational Coordinator in the Delinquency Department.

Salary: $49,254 - $73,902. This position is eligible for the 10% addition to pay effective January 12, 2020.

This is a non-merit position. The Family Court of St. Louis County will handle recruitment for this position. The position is eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

Examples of Duties

An employee in this job class and position performs educational and supportive work of marked difficulty requiring significant independent judgment. This position involves providing educational instruction, educational advocacy, and developing skill competencies with youth referred to the Juvenile Office’s educational programs. Work is performed under the general direction of a manager in the Delinquency Services Department. Work is reviewed by periodic supervisory conferences, reports submitted, and achievement of stated goals.

Serves as a teacher for a self-contained classroom for youth referred to the Juvenile Office.

Creates, coordinates, and implements academic instruction for the PROJECT Liaison Educational Advocacy Resource Network (L.E.A.R.N.) program.

Provides instructions and manages students in preparation for taking the Hi-Set Test.

Creates lesson plans to enhance youth learning.

Conducts orientation meetings with youth and parents/custodians.

Provides academic tests to students as part of program intake and to assess their progress upon completing the program.

Conducts ongoing assessments of the youths’ strengths and challenges and shares observations with relevant parties.

Maintains records and grades on all students, writes reports, and advocates for students as they enter and exit the program.

Conducts parent and student conferences.

Supports youth in group-counseling sessions.

Advocates for youth involved with the Juvenile Office with area school districts to facilitate the transition back into school to continue their education.

Reports students’ progress to their Deputy Juvenile Officers.

Creates and forwards report cards summarizing student’s success to their Deputy Juvenile Officers.

Writes initial staffing and closing reports.

Attends and completes a minimum of 24 hours of approved training per merit year to enhance professional development; remains abreast of current trends and issues in juvenile justice.

Examples of other Duties:

Provides crisis intervention and emotional support to youth as needed.

Provides tutoring and specialized instruction for high-needs youth.

Participates in supervisory unit conferences, exchanges ideas, and evaluates strategies on specific cases.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and possession of, eligibility to obtain, teacher certification from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education required, plus at least one year of professional teaching experience with adolescents; special education teacher certification in Learning Disabilities (L.D.) and or Emotional Disturbance (E.D.) and/or special education teaching experience are highly preferred; a Master’s degree is preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Information

All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time, term or on-call position will be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be paid by the County. Applicants will also be required to submit to an extensive background and criminal record check.

St. Louis County offers its employees many excellent benefits with paid medical insurance, 20 days of PTO (paid time off) the first year and increasing with seniority, and 11-12 paid holidays. Employees hired for full time employment will participate in the St. Louis County retirement plan where they contribute 4% of their salary to the defined benefit plan with vesting after 7 years. Other benefits include: paid life insurance, a credit union, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, pre-tax premium pay plan, dependent care and medical expense reimbursement plans, and short and long term disability insurance.

In addition to these benefits, as of January 1, 2023, St. Louis County approved up to 480 hours of paid parental leave for eligible employees welcoming new children, either by birth or adoption. The employee can also take up to 80 hours of leave for prenatal care and up to 80 hours for care of the child within the first year.
