Full Job Description

The Operations Pharmacy Manager will be an expert in pharmacy operations and medication-use systems. This Manager will take on advanced responsibilities in the areas of pharmacy operations, technology and automation, medication safety, quality improvement, compliance, technician oversight and training, medication compounding and preparation, and education related to all aspects of pharmacy operations. The Operations Pharmacy Manager will report to the Director of Pharmacy to provide safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered medication use.

Medication Systems and Operations Coordination and Implementation
- Manage and lead the provision of safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered pharmacy patient care services and operations for areas of responsibility
- Responsible for operational systems to assure appropriate prescribing, distribution, administration, and monitoring outcomes of drug therapy process
- Manage technology and automation to allow for optimum resources
- Evaluate new automation
- Assure that existing automation is being utilized at the highest level of efficiency and develop efficiency standards for each
- Assure compliance within sterile compounding (USP 797/800) and non-sterile compounding practices (USP 795)
- Review reports for medication errors, adverse drug events, ineffective service, or other problem identification. Analyze and implement quality improvement measures for improving organizational performance
- Assist and coordinate efforts to ensure operations meet compliance and quality improvement standards and initiatives
- Identify opportunities to redesign operational systems to maximize labor and operational efficiency
- Planning and project management for specific projects and new services related to departmental goals
- Coordinate and monitor pharmacy internal and external workload and productivity monitoring systems
- Develop and/or maintain patient care services and operational policies and procedures
Practice Advancement and Optimization
- Monitor staff performance
- Actively participate in the ongoing professional development of individual pharmacists via education, mentorship, and competency development
- Develop, lead, implement and manage advanced inpatient pharmacy patient care services and practice standards
- Actively participate in the education of the next generation of pharmacists via pharmacy student clerkships, pharmacy internships, and post-graduate residency training programs
- Lead pharmacist participation in meaningful scholarship (e.g. podium presentations, posters, publications) by example and through mentorship of department pharmacists and residents
- Lead and manage ongoing quality improvement projects related to preceptor development and learning experience delivery
- Serve as an advisor and/or preceptor for students/interns/residents on patient care and administrative rotations/residencies
- Participate as a member of pharmacy department and hospital multidisciplinary team and committees
- In absence of the pharmacy director or manager, assures that the pharmacy staff are in compliance with the local, state and federal regulatory/accreditation agencies
Human resource management
- Management of personnel supporting pharmacy operations
- Evaluate performance of assigned personnel
- Coordinate and lead team and staff meetings for assigned areas of responsibility
- Work with staff on an ongoing basis to improve performance and attain their professional development goals by directing, coaching and supporting
- Monitor the progress of assignments and performance of daily responsibilities for all assigned personnel, coaching and disciplining staff as necessary
- Identify and deal with personnel issues in a proactive and timely manner, with appropriate follow-up as necessary
- Manage labor expenses
- Manage employee leaves of absence and family medical leaves
- Staff orientation, training and competency assessment

Education:

Required:
Bachelor's Degree - Graduate of an A.C.P.E. accredited College of Pharmacy
Preferred: Doctoral Degree - Pharm D.

License or Certification Requirements:

Required: License
- Current licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Mississippi

Experience:

5 years as a pharmacist with (3) years in a leadership role in an acute care setting

Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills
Organization and time-management skills are essential

Abilities:

Ability to effect change by assuming leadership roles in interdisciplinary teams and supporting the growth and development of team members
Ability to communicate and collaborate with physicians, administration, staff and community to meet the patient needs for the area of management
Ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting concurrent tasks with excellent follow through

Work Environment: Work is generally performed in a healthcare environment. Exposure to chemicals which may be used in patient care. Position may be required to travel to various locations.

Physical Demands: Frequent reaching, sitting, walking, and standing may be required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job.
