Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary function of this position is to provide technical assistance and coordination of the usage of equipment, supplies and instruments before, during, and after surgical procedures. The Perioperative Services Support Tech is trained to assist nursing staff with direct and indirect nursing care. The Unit Coordinator or Charge Nurse on duty assigns the Perioperative Services Support Tech specific responsibilities. The Perioperative Services Support Tech may be assigned to one specific task or may rotate assignments during their shift.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Follows North Oaks Health System's compliance programs and all federal and state regulatory guidelines.

1. Hazards: Radiation exposure and cleaning compound exposure

2. Adverse Working Conditions: Reports unsafe conditions, incidents, and injuries.

Transports Patients from nursing units to holding areas

Demonstrates good interpersonal relationships.

Extends courtesy and consideration for others.

2. Contacts with Other Departments:

Lab: Assists in the collection of specimens, records specimens in logbook and transport specimens to pathology/lab.

Bio-Med: Report malfunctioning equipment. Returning loaner equipment. Retrieving new or loaner equipment.

Sterile Processing: Retrieving or returning instrumentation.

Materials: Retrieving or returning supplies

Blood Bank: Safe and timely transport of blood and blood products and maintain records/logbooks

Nursing Units: Transporting patients to holding areas

E. Responsibilities:

1. Responsibility for the safety of others:

Knowledgeable of all hospital safety related codes and performs duties in drills and actual emergencies. Reviews the operation of emergency equipment. Reports unsafe conditions and incidents.

• Maintains confidentiality of patients and departments.

4. Responsibility for Performance of Work without immediate supervisor:

• Maintains and increases standards of performance.

Attends department unit meetings.

Participates in in-service classes.

Shares knowledge with others.

Shares in the responsibility of providing emergency services.

Participates interdepartmentally in the Quality Improvement process.

Assists in cleaning OR transport stretchers.

Assists with wiping equipment with disinfectant before bringing equipment into OR rooms or hallways.

Assists in housekeeping functions to maintain cleanliness in the Operating Room to ensure a safe patient environment.

Assists in the responsibility for the care, handling, storage and transporting of professional supplies and equipment. Is aware of the need for special handling of surgical equipment and supplies

Assists in pulling supplies and equipment for scheduled surgical cases

Adheres to the Operating Room standards on aseptic technique and infection control

Adheres to the policy and procedures which govern the Operating Room.

Operates the video camera and monitoring equipment during procedures requiring video

Notifies Bio-Med Tech and the OR Manager of equipment malfunctioning that cannot be corrected immediately.

Participates in unit meetings.

Assists OR personnel in the turnover of OR rooms, i.e. preparing equipment, supplies, housekeeping duties as needed and the acquisition of or dispersing of OR patients as needed.

Assists in maintaining and restocking OR supplies, including the DME room, OR suites and sterile core.

Assists OR personnel during procedures, i.e. positioning patients, moving patients as needed, assisting in obtaining supplies or equipment not in the room

Assists with washing, decontamination and returning equipment to storage areas

Dons gloves, gowns according to protocol for sterile tech.

Maintains sterile technique according to protocol.

Assists surgeon in retraction as directed by physician.

Able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.

• Performs other duties as required.

Accepts and acts upon constructive criticism. Seeks clarification of duties when indicated.

Maintains an employment record in accordance with hospital policy. Complies with attendance policies

Adhere to acceptable dress code.

5. Responsibility for the Supervision of Others:

Participates in the orientation of new employees.
