Full Job Description

United Lutheran Seminary is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, diverse learning environment for aspiring leaders who are committed to promoting grace-filled encounters. Our mission involves spiritual leadership, public advocacy, impactful worship, and care for neighbors. We are currently in search of a dedicated and detail-oriented Part-time Accounting Assistant to bolster our team. Reporting directly to the Senior Controller, this role is pivotal in maintaining efficient and compliant bi-weekly payroll processing, as well as the administration of staff and faculty credit cards. This position will work a minimum of 20 hours per week and be eligible for paid vacation, sick and holiday time off.

The Accounting Assistant will primarily be responsible for overseeing payroll processing for the Seminary and its associated entities. This includes reviewing timesheets for accuracy within the ADP payroll system, entering garnishments and payroll deductions, producing necessary payroll reports for benefits payments and general ledger reconciliation, conducting quarterly payroll tax returns reconciliations, and handling payroll data review and manual entry as required. Under the guidance of the Senior Controller, the Accounting Assistant will also prepare payroll cost estimates for various agency programs and grant budgets, manage year-end payroll reconciliations, and provide documentation for annual audits and Form 990 submissions. Additionally, the role involves supporting employee inquiries, ensuring timely remittance of 403b deferrals, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), and Health Savings Accounts (HSA), managing and maintaining credit card administration for the University, assisting with RAMP issues, setting up credit card general ledger accounts and projects, issuing and terminating credit card accounts, and serving as a backup for Accounts Payable processing.

The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma plus five years of work experience in accounting or finance; or an Associate degree in accounting or finance. A minimum of two years in non-profit accounting or finance. Two years of payroll processing experience and two years of accounts payable experience are also mandatory. Proficiency in the ADP Workforce Now system is essential, along with familiarity with Blackbaud or similar accounting software, and the RAMP credit card software is preferred but not mandatory. A strong command of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word, is required. The candidate must remain calm under pressure, possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Physical requirements include the ability to see and use fingers and hands, with the position potentially requiring extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, or bending. Travel between the Philadelphia and Gettysburg campuses may be necessary. The role demands efficient verbal and written communication skills.
