ABOUT THE POSITION

Want to reach out and serve the community as an Animal Services Dispatcher I - Per Diem? Interested in doing that as part of a dynamic and progressive fire district? Under the direct supervision of the Communications Administrative Supervisor, the Animal Services Dispatcher I - Per Diem receives and processes emergency and non-emergency calls related to animal services, dispatches Animal Services Officers, provides information and assistance to the public, and performs related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

The Animal Services Dispatcher I - Per Diem is an entry-level classification assigned to the Communications Center. Under general supervision, incumbents receive requests for service, gather and document pertinent information, dispatch routine and emergency calls to Animal Services Officers and provide information and assistance to the public, law enforcement agencies, and other partner agencies regarding animal services, shelter operations, and applicable state and local laws.
This classification is limited to animal services communications and dispatch functions. Unlike a Public Safety Dispatcher, this position does not dispatch law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical resources.

Employment in this position is contingent upon the contract between the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department. Changes to the contract may affect continued employment in this classification.

The duties listed below are representative of the work performed in this classification. Employees may not perform every duty listed and may be assigned additional responsibilities to meet operational needs.

Receive and process emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations regarding animal services, animal cruelty investigations, animal control matters, regulatory issues, and shelter operations.
Gather information from callers, assess the nature of the call, determine the appropriate response, and take or coordinate appropriate action.
Apply applicable state and local animal control laws, regulations, policies, and procedures when handling calls and dispatching resources.
Operate multi-line telephone systems, computer applications, radio systems, and other communications equipment to support field operations.
Monitor the location and status of Animal Services Officers, dispatch calls for service, coordinate backup assistance when needed, and support officer safety.
Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation.
Provide courteous, professional, and responsive customer service by assisting the public directly or making appropriate referrals.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

Geography of Contra Costa County, including city boundaries and surrounding areas.
Current technology and communications systems used in the profession (computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, VESTA 911 telephone system, Microsoft Teams phone system, and Motorola Solutions radio communications systems).
District customer service standards and objectives

Skill and Ability to:

Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information accurately and effectively with members of the public, law enforcement personnel, and other agencies.
Read, understand, and apply ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Operate multi-line telephone systems, computer applications, radio systems, and other communications equipment.
Accurately document information while handling multiple tasks and high-priority situations.
Maintain accurate records and logs.
Remain calm, professional, and effective during stressful or emotionally charged situations.
Communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
Treat coworkers, outside agencies, and members of the public with courtesy and respect.
Assess customer needs and provide appropriate assistance or referrals.
Deliver prompt, efficient, and responsive customer service.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT

The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is an independent Special District in Contra Costa County responsible for providing a high level of emergency and non-emergency services to the communities it serves. The District's service area encompasses approximately 155 square miles, serving the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon, the southern boundary of Morgan Territory, and the Tassajara Valley. The communities are primarily residential, commercial, office park, and controlled manufacturing, along with wildland areas, protected by nine stations and one volunteer staffed station with 185 employees, and 56 volunteers. Financial oversight and strategic policy direction are provided by an elected 5-member Board of Directors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EDUCATION
Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Current Communication Reserve
OR
At least six (6) months of experience in animal services field or in a customer service, dispatch, call center, or clerical position responsible for receiving, evaluating, and responding to inquiries or complaints.

Upon the hiring managers decision, any combination of training, experience, and education may be substituted to meet the minimum qualifications.
