Full Job Description

Registered Nurse — Freestanding Emergency Center

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our freestanding emergency center. The RN provides timely, patient-centered care to individuals experiencing acute illnesses and injuries across the lifespan.

This position is responsible for assessing patient needs, performing triage, developing and implementing nursing care plans, administering medications and treatments, assisting with diagnostic and emergency procedures, educating patients and families, and maintaining accurate medical records. The ideal candidate is clinically skilled, dependable, adaptable, and able to remain composed in a fast-paced emergency care environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Assessment and Emergency Care

Perform timely patient assessments, including collection of current symptoms, medical history, allergies, medications, vital signs, and other relevant clinical information.
Perform triage while considering the patient’s physical, emotional, developmental, and psychosocial needs.
Collaborate with physicians and other members of the healthcare team to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care.
Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate nursing interventions based on established protocols and standards of care.
Provide Basic and Advanced Life Support interventions and assist with stabilizing patients experiencing medical emergencies.
Monitor and interpret information from cardiac monitors and other clinical equipment, promptly responding to abnormal findings.
Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during examinations, diagnostic testing, procedures, and treatments.
Provide safe, effective bedside nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled patients.
Coordinate patient transfers and provide an accurate handoff report when a higher level of care or inpatient admission is required.

Medications, Treatments, and Procedures

Prepare, administer, and document prescribed medications using oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous, and other approved routes.
Provide IV therapy, including insertion, maintenance, medication administration, and monitoring.
Monitor patients for therapeutic response, adverse reactions, and changes in condition.
Promptly report medication or treatment reactions and take appropriate action in accordance with facility policy.
Perform wound care, including cleaning, dressing, and bandaging wounds.
Collect specimens and assist with other clinical procedures within the RN’s authorized scope of practice.
Follow medication-safety, infection-prevention, and patient-identification standards.

Documentation and Patient Education

Document assessments, interventions, medications, treatments, patient responses, and changes in condition accurately and promptly in the medical record.
Ensure documentation is complete, concise, and entered using the appropriate forms and electronic systems.
Initiate and provide patient education based on the plan of care and provider instructions.
Educate patients and caregivers regarding diagnoses, medications, home-care needs, nutrition, activity, rehabilitation, warning signs, and follow-up care.
Provide appropriate referrals and discharge instructions to support continuity of care.
Confirm patient or caregiver understanding through teach-back or another approved method.

Safety, Compliance, and Professional Conduct

Maintain adequate clinical supplies and ensure equipment is available, functional, and ready for patient care.
Follow all facility policies, safety procedures, infection-control practices, and emergency protocols.
Protect patient privacy and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other applicable federal and state requirements.
Respect the cultural, religious, and personal preferences of patients and their families.
Identify and report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation in accordance with mandatory-reporting laws and facility policy.
Demonstrate professionalism, sound clinical judgment, and effective communication while managing multiple urgent priorities.
Complete all required orientation, education, competencies, and annual training.
Report to assigned shifts punctually and maintain dependable attendance.
Perform other duties within the RN’s scope of practice as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program.
Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in good standing with the applicable state licensing board.
At least one year of recent Emergency Department nursing experience.
Current Basic Life Support certification.
Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification.
All required licenses, certifications, and employment credentials must be current and on file before the first scheduled shift.
Demonstrated competency in emergency assessment, triage, medication administration, IV therapy, cardiac monitoring, and emergency response.
Ability to prioritize care and make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication, documentation, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively and respectfully with patients, families, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a freestanding emergency center.
Experience caring for adult and pediatric emergency patients.
Certified Emergency Nurse credential.
