Job Description

General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible work in the children, young adult or adult departments.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class is responsible for circulation, programming, material

acquisition and leadership. Duties include the responsibility for providing customer support in circulation and reference services. Work generally requires the employee to check materials in and out at the circulation desk and assist patrons with reference methods and resources. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Library

Manager III.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Works at the circulation desk checking materials in and out; answers telephones; and provides assistance to patrons
Notifies patrons of overdue books and fines; collects fees and fines
Registers patrons for new or replacement cards
Promotes new materials and determines when they rotate off the new shelves
Answers patrons’ questions regarding reference material
Registers patrons for computer usage and assists with computer applications
Assists patrons in finding research materials
Provides basic readers’ advisory for all age groups
Counts the library’s nightly deposits
Shelves books and maintains shelves for accuracy and neatness
Maintains current knowledge of juvenile/young adult books and authors as well as trends in library services
Maintains an inviting young adult area with current displays
Plans, schedules, and performs programs for young adults (6th-12th grade)
Plans, schedules and performs Summer Reading programming for all young adults (6th – 12th grade)
Plans, schedules and facilitates TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meetings and events; recruits and coordinates volunteers
Collaborates with local schools and/or community organizations to perform outreach services including book check out and programming
Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations

Supervise staff and operation of library in the absence of Library Manager III and Librarian
May open and/or close the library
May perform light clerical duties
May plan, schedule, or perform programs for children
Performs other related duties as required
Helps to plan, market and implement library programming

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to assist with planning, implementing and conducting library outreach programs.
Ability to select appropriate materials for patrons of varying reading levels.
General knowledge of children’s/young adult literature, reader interest levels and books and authors of interest to children of all ages.
Skill in storytelling and/or producing crafts.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to multi-task while providing excellent customer service.
Thorough knowledge of the library’s collection.
Thorough knowledge of automated circulation system.
Thorough knowledge of the library’s organization, policies, and procedures and ability to interpret and implement.
General knowledge of library techniques, systems and tools.
General knowledge of age appropriate materials.
General knowledge of English grammar, spelling and composition.
Ability to organize work and exercise sound judgment while working independently.
Ability to operate a variety of equipment both standard and electronic.
Ability to handle routine and unusual situations related to patrons and the general public.
Ability to make accurate numerical calculations.
Ability to use reference materials and develop research strategies using a variety of media.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with all patrons and the general public.
Ability to lead others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and the general public, including community organizations, vendors, daycare providers, schools, coworkers, temporary staff, volunteers, children, patrons and the general public.
General knowledge of safety procedures and policies and ability to handle emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Worker is required to have close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform accounting and transcription, work on a computer terminal, perform extensive reading, visually inspect small defects or parts, use measurement devices or assemble or fabricate parts at distances close to eyes.
Worker is required to visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
Worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
Worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more to the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
Worker is required to function in a narrow aisles or passageways.
Worker may be in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids during the performance of his/her duties.

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited 4-year college with a bachelor’s degree in Educational Media, English, History, Social Sciences or Humanities (or similar discipline).
Some supervisory and public library experience preferred or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid North Carolina Driver License.
