Full Job Description

The Behavioral Health Specialist (BHS) Manager is responsible for the supervision, oversight, and development of the Behavioral Health Specialist team. This position focuses on staff accountability, scheduling, training, performance management, and ensuring that all BHS staff provide quality patient care in accordance with facility policies and expectations. The BHS Manager serves as a visible leader who promotes professionalism, patient engagement, safety, and a therapeutic treatment environment.

This is a full-time, hourly position with flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays as needed.

Pay Scale: $26.00 - $30.00 per hour based on education and experience.

Responsibilities:

Staff Management & Oversight

Maintain a regular presence throughout the facility, monitoring staff performance and patient interactions.
Ensure BHS staff are adhering to assignment sheets and completing assigned duties as written each shift.
Verify staff are present in their assigned areas and providing appropriate supervision of patients.
Monitor staff professionalism, including adherence to dress code, attendance expectations, and workplace conduct.
Ensure staff are actively engaging with patients and facilitating a therapeutic environment.
Conduct coaching, counseling, and corrective action as needed to address performance concerns.
Complete employee performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and support.
Promote accountability and maintain consistent enforcement of facility policies and procedures.
Work 1-2 eight-hour shifts per week on the floor.
Provide direct BHS coverage during staff call-offs when needed to ensure adequate staffing and continuity of patient care.

Scheduling & Attendance Management

Develop and manage BHS staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage across all shifts.
Adjust staffing as needed based on census, acuity, and program needs.
Approve time-off requests and maintain schedule accuracy.
Track employee attendance, including call-offs, tardiness, and other attendance concerns.
Complete attendance-related documentation and policy-based corrective actions when necessary.
Coordinate shift coverage and staffing adjustments in collaboration with leadership.
Maintain attendance records and communicate attendance trends to leadership as needed.

Training & Development

Coordinate new hire onboarding.
Ensure all new BHS staff receive appropriate training and support.
Coordinate ongoing staff education and development opportunities with therapist leadership staff.
Support staff in developing therapeutic, professional, and patient engagement skills.
Identify and address performance concerns promptly and constructively.
Ensure timely completion of CPI certification, annual competencies, and other required trainings.

Program Oversight & Activities

Approve, organize, and oversee weekend outings and activities.
Ensure outings and group activities align with treatment goals, safety protocols, and facility expectations.
Collaborate with clinical and nursing teams to maintain consistent DBT coaching skills and 12-step facilitation skills as behavioral interventions with patients.
Monitor the quality and effectiveness of patient engagement activities and programming.

Communication & Coordination

Serve as the primary communication link between nursing, clinical staff, and the BHS department.
Communicate important updates, policy changes, and operational information to staff.
Participate in operations meetings and contribute to staffing planning and quality improvement initiatives.
Assist with implementation of new policies, procedures, and program initiatives.
Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by leadership.

Work Expectations

The BHS Manager is expected to dedicate approximately 24-32 hours per week to management and supervisory responsibilities, with the remainder of time on the floor in the BHS capacity as a working manager.
The primary responsibility is ensuring BHS staff are functioning professionally, using trauma-informed principles to support patients with psychiatric illnesses by supervising, monitoring, coaching, and supporting BHS staff while ensuring compliance with facility policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
The BHS Manager must maintain visibility throughout the facility and actively monitor staff performance, patient engagement, safety practices, and overall unit operations.
Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required to ensure adequate oversight of all shifts and programming.

Qualifications, Education & Experience:

Master's degree in behavioral health, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or a related field OR current Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) certification required.
Minimum of two (2) years of Behavioral Health Specialist management experience.
Supervisory experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, substance use treatment, or residential treatment setting preferred.
Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, scheduling, performance management, conflict resolution, and employee development.
Strong understanding of behavioral health treatment environments, patient safety practices, and therapeutic interventions.
Current CPI certification preferred.
Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with nursing, medical, clinical, and administrative leadership teams.
