Full Job Description

Concurrent live interpretation using Zoom (via computer) plus a phone with headset. This is a part-time position as-needed to support our live events with Korean Simulcasts.

THIS JOB REQUIRES MULTITASKING. DO NOT APPLY IF YOU CANNOT PERFORM LIVE SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION WHILE KEEPING UP IN WEB-BASED STAFF CHAT.

You will be expected to listen to a live English broadcast of a virtual forum in one ear on Zoom, and deliver concurrent translation using your Phone with a hands-free headset. You must have technical proficiency with computers and web browsers. We provide training on the web-based platform, and a hands-free headset if needed.

Concurrent Translation Method:

Interpreters will need to have a hands-free headset with microphone connected to their phone to deliver translation AND a headset to listen to the live forum broadcast via Zoom on a computer. Some clients provide substantial scripting for their events, while others provide very little scripting at all.

Interpreters will need to listen to a live virtual forum using the Zoom app on a laptop or desktop computer. Interpreters then deliver their live concurrent translation using a phone with reliable service and a quality hands-free headset.

YOU MUST BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO A LIVE FORUM WHILE DELIVERING YOUR TRANSLATION SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Simultaneous translation requires constant interpretation while listening to a live English-language event. Interpreters must be connected to the English-language broadcast on Zoom, while delivering Korean-language translation using their phone. Interpreters must also use a web-based chat on their computer for communicating with their interpreting partner and with TTHM event managers.

TTHM pairs two interpreters for most events, and translators communicate using the web-based chat to switch live interpretation about every fifteen minutes. Events typically last one hour with a 15 minute setup and sound check period before the live broadcast. You will be paid $125 total for the 15 minutes of setup and for one hour of live translation, typically with a partner.

Interpreters receive some scripted material to live-translate, but some segments of each forum will be unscripted and require real-time live translation.

Joining the Zoom Webinar to Listen to English:

2-3 Days Prior to the Event you will receive an instructional email from TTHM containing a link to join a Zoom event as an Interpreter.

Connect Headphones to your computer so that you can hear the English broadcast without the English broadcast being heard on your interpretation line. You will need to listen to the English broadcast on headphones through Zoom, and then use a phone with a quality headset (boom mic is the best) to deliver your interpretation.*

*If you are lacking quality equipment to both listen to the English broadcast and deliver a quality translation, please contact TTHM to request an equipment upgrade.

Joining the Speaker Line to Deliver Translation:

Dial Into the Speaker Line for delivering your translation using your phone. TTHM will send you an email containing the Speaker Line for delivering your interpretation. This Speaker Line will be a phone number plus an extension. Join the Speaker Line fifteen minutes before broadcast to do a sound-check with your interpreting partner and make sure that your audio quality is loud and clear.

DO NOT USE SPEAKERPHONE. You must use a hands-free set or wired boom mic connected to your phone for ideal audio quality. If you lack this equipment, reach out to TTHM for help.

Using Staff Chat to Dialogue with Event Team:

Interpreters will need to have access to a computer with internet access and a web browser. Training will detail how to join the Observer Platform and Staff Chat within to facilitate communication during each live event.

Join Staff Chat on the Observer Platform in the Teletownhall system using the information emailed to you in the days before the event. Log into the admin page, open the Observer platform for your alternate language broadcast, click on the Staff Chat button at the bottom of the Observer platform, and Log In by entering your Name and clicking OK. Then use Staff Chat to coordinate with your interpreting partner and with TTHM staff throughout the live event.

Remember to join Zoom, dial into the Speaker Line, and log into Staff Chat at least 15 minutes prior to the event start time. Interpreters are compensated for this additional 15 minute setup period. This will give you time to troubleshoot any problems with audio connections, and logging into Staff Chat will let your TTHM Moderator know that you are ready to go for the live event.

Work Availability:

Applicants will need to prove their capabilities in a virtual training over the phone and web. Successful applicants can then notify TTHM of their availability using WhenIWork online. Interpreters who are successful in translating live events may be given other hourly translation opportunities.

TTHM produces events with live Korean translation most often during the day between 10am and 3pm Mountain Time and sometimes in the evening between 4pm and 8pm Mountain Time. Events are scheduled based on client needs, so there is no consistent schedule. Interpreters are expected to relay their availability using the WhenIWork scheduler. Our busiest period is between mid-August and mid-December each year, but we produce Korean Simulcasts year-round based on client needs.

Applicants will need to pass a check against the OIG Exclusions Database, and will need to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement after receiving security training.
