Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Assistant Director/ Lead Teacher is a working leadership position responsible for supporting the Director and Administrative Team while maintaining a full-time classroom teaching role. This position is ideal for an experienced Early Childhood Educator who is passionate about leadership, professional growth, and high-quality early childhood education.

The Assistant Director’s primary responsibility is the successful management of their assigned classroom while serving as a member of the leadership team. Administrative responsibilities, leadership training, and project work will be completed during times when classroom ratios are low, additional staff coverage is available, or when scheduled administrative time is provided. Candidates must be able to effectively balance classroom responsibilities with growing leadership first before taking on administrative duties.

The Assistant Director will participate in The Ark’s mentorship and leadership development program, learning all center policies, procedures, administrative operations, and New Hampshire Child Care Licensing Regulations. This role serves as a pathway for professional growth while ensuring high-quality care, education, and leadership throughout the center.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership & Administration

Work collaboratively with the Director and Administrative Team to support the mission, vision, and goals of the center.
Participate in leadership training and The Ark’s mentorship program.
Learn and maintain knowledge of New Hampshire Child Care Licensing Regulations and center policies and procedures.
Assist with family communication, enrollment support, tours, and maintaining required records and documentation.
Support staff development through positive leadership, mentoring, and teamwork.
Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
Assist with special events, family engagement activities, and center-wide initiatives.
Help ensure a safe, welcoming, and professional environment throughout the center.
Support administrative functions as assigned, including compliance monitoring, paperwork review, scheduling support, and operational tasks.

Classroom Responsibilities

Maintain a full-time teaching position while serving as a member of the leadership team.
Demonstrate strong classroom management and positive guidance techniques.
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities.
Create a nurturing, engaging, and safe learning environment.
Build positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
Ensure classroom compliance with all licensing, health, safety, and program requirements.
Model professionalism and high-quality teaching practices for staff.

Qualifications

Experience in Early Childhood Education required.
Leadership experience in an early childhood setting preferred.
Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred.
Relevant education, credentials, and experience will be considered.
Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with administration and remain open to coaching, feedback, and ongoing training.
Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
Successful completion of all required background checks and state requirements.

Compensation

Compensation is competitive and based on experience, education, credentials, and demonstrated leadership ability.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and sit on the floor throughout the workday.
Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors.
Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
