Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in supporting youth who have experienced trauma, particularly those coming from the state system or CPS. This position focuses on building trust, stability, and emotional safety for children and teens in care. The DSP helps children with daily routines, models healthy relationships, and fosters a nurturing environment that promotes healing, growth, and independence. A trauma-informed approach, patience, empathy, and consistency are essential to the success of this role.

Key Responsibilities

Provide daily structure and support for children and adolescents who have experienced abuse, neglect, or other traumatic events.
Assist with Activities of Daily Living such as hygiene, dressing, and eating, with sensitivity to developmental levels and emotional readiness.
Build trust-based relationships with youth through consistent, compassionate interactions.
Help youth develop coping skills, social skills, and emotional regulation through guided activities and coaching.
Implement trauma-informed care plans designed by clinicians and team members, tailored to each child's unique needs.
Support behavioral interventions while maintaining a calm and non-punitive environment.
Create a safe, structured home environment that encourages stability and routine.
Provide support with school attendance, homework, appointments, and recreational activities.
Prepare meals and snacks according to dietary needs and cultural preferences.
Maintain documentation on behaviors, progress, and incidents in a timely and professional manner.
Participate in team meetings and trainings focused on trauma, de-escalation, and child development.
Report any signs of abuse, neglect, or major changes in behavior to supervisors as required.

Preferred Skills & Experience

Experience working with children in foster care, group homes, or other residential settings.
Understanding of trauma-informed care principles and ability to apply them in daily interactions.
Strong communication skills and ability to de-escalate challenging behaviors.
Familiarity with developmental delays, emotional dysregulation, and attachment disorders.
Ability to set healthy boundaries and model respectful, stable adult relationships.
CPR, First Aid, and de-escalation training.
Experience with documenting care and working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to lift, transport, and supervise children during community outings and daily routines.
