Project Accounting

Duration: 1 year assignment

Position Overview

The Project Accounting is an opportunity focused on complex capital project accounting, financial analysis, month-end close activity, audit support, and process improvement. This position offers exposure to capital assets, project accounting, reporting, controls, and balance remediation work within a technical accounting environment. The Project Accounting Advisor II will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders while helping to improve reporting accuracy, documentation, and process efficiency. This opportunity is well suited to candidates who enjoy resolving complex accounting issues and working across both recurring close activity and project-based work.

Role Context

This role sits within a capital assets and project accounting environment and supports accounting activity linked to capital expenditure and related balances. The position works across accounting, fixed assets, capital management, financial reporting, regulatory, tax, and FP&A functions. The work includes support for capital projects, close processes, audits, controls, and continuous improvement activity in a technically focused finance setting.

Key Responsibilities

Perform and support monthly close activities related to capital projects and capital assets.
Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, cost transfers, and supporting documentation.
Support project accounting activity including project setup, cost tracking, capitalization readiness, and project closeout.
Analyse and resolve complex accounting issues, balance discrepancies, and transaction exceptions.
Prepare recurring and ad hoc reporting related to capital projects and capital assets.
Support AFUDC/IDC calculations and related accounting processes.
Assist with cost transfer and allocation activity.
Support audit requests, internal control requirements, walkthroughs, and testing activity.
Maintain and improve process documentation, narratives, and supporting procedures.
Contribute to balance cleanup projects, process enhancement initiatives, and continuous improvement work.
Provide technical guidance and review support to other accounting team members.
Partner with stakeholders across accounting, capital management, fixed assets, financial reporting, regulatory, tax, and FP&A teams.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Essential: 3+ years of progressive accounting experience.
Essential: Strong understanding of accounting principles and month-end close processes.
Essential: Experience in project accounting, capital accounting, fixed assets, or construction accounting environments.
Essential: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Essential: Advanced Excel skills.
Essential: Experience working with large ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle.
Essential: Ability to independently research accounting issues, draw conclusions, and communicate recommendations.
Essential: Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Desirable: CPA designation or CPA candidacy.
Desirable: Utility industry experience.
Desirable: Experience with capital project accounting and CWIP accounting.
Desirable: Experience with project cost transfers, capital accruals, AFUDC/IDC, and capital reporting.
Desirable: Experience supporting external audits, SOX controls, and internal control documentation.
Desirable: Experience developing or maintaining accounting process documentation and walkthrough materials.
Desirable: Experience leading or supporting process improvement initiatives.
Desirable: Experience coaching or mentoring junior accounting team members.
Desirable: Experience in fixed asset accounting, asset unitization, in-service and capitalization processes, depreciation accounting, asset retirement, asset transfers, asset master data management, and balance remediation projects.
