Assistant General Manager
Courtyard by Marriott – Brighton, Michigan
The Assistant General Manager is a key member of the hotel’s leadership team and supports the General Manager in overseeing the hotel’s daily operations, team performance, guest satisfaction and financial results.
This is a hands-on leadership position. The AGM is expected to be visible throughout the hotel, actively support each department and help ensure that our associates have the training, direction and resources needed to deliver an excellent guest experience.
The AGM will also serve as the property leader and manager on duty when the General Manager is unavailable.
Key Responsibilities Hotel Operations
- Assist the General Manager with the daily operation of the hotel, including front office, housekeeping, maintenance, food and beverage and other operating departments.
- Maintain a visible presence throughout the property and actively assist departments during periods of high occupancy, staffing shortages or increased guest demand.
- Ensure that the hotel consistently meets Marriott brand standards, Nofar Hotel Group expectations and applicable legal and safety requirements.
- Complete property inspections and follow up promptly on cleanliness, maintenance, safety and service concerns.
- Support emergency preparedness and respond appropriately to operational incidents, guest emergencies and property-related issues.
Team Leadership
- Serve as a primary point of contact for hotel associates regarding daily operations, training, coaching, counseling and performance expectations.
- Assist with recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, training and retaining qualified team members.
- Hold associates accountable while maintaining a professional, respectful and team-oriented work environment.
- Lead by example through dependability, professionalism, urgency and consistent adherence to company policies.
- Communicate clearly and professionally using approved company communication and reporting platforms.
- Help implement new brand programs, company procedures and operational initiatives.
Guest Experience
- Serve as a primary escalation point for guest concerns and service recovery.
- Ensure guest complaints are investigated, documented and resolved promptly and professionally.
- Monitor guest satisfaction results, online reviews and operational trends, and assist in implementing corrective action plans.
- Oversee Marriott Bonvoy recognition, enrollment and compliance with loyalty-related brand standards.
- Ensure guest reviews and correspondence are answered through approved platforms and within company expectations.
Financial and Business Performance
- Assist the General Manager in managing labor, scheduling, payroll, purchasing, inventory and departmental expenses.
- Review hotel performance reports and help identify opportunities to improve revenue, control expenses and strengthen profitability.
- Understand the hotel’s rate strategy, occupancy goals, budget expectations, fees and sales priorities.
- Support local sales efforts, group business, account relationships and revenue-generating opportunities.
- Maintain appropriate cash-handling, purchasing and internal-control procedures.
Organization and Communication
- Demonstrate strong time management, attention to detail, self-motivation and proactive planning.
- Complete assigned reports, follow-up items and operational responsibilities accurately and on time.
- Prepare for and participate in required meetings, conference calls, training sessions, planning meetings and company communications.
- Work collaboratively with the General Manager, ownership, corporate leadership and department teams.
- Use hotel systems and company platforms effectively, including the property-management system, scheduling and payroll systems, guest-response platforms, Slack and applicable Marriott systems.
Qualifications
- At least two years of hotel operations or supervisory experience preferred.
- Previous experience in a Marriott-branded hotel is preferred.
- Experience supervising multiple hotel departments is strongly preferred.
- Strong guest-service, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of hotel operations, scheduling, labor management and financial controls.
- Ability to remain calm, professional and decisive during difficult guest or operational situations.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the General Manager’s absence.
- Comfortable using hotel operating systems, email, reporting tools and Microsoft Office applications.
- Previous experience with Marriott systems, including STAY PMS and Power of M, is preferred. Candidates without direct experience must demonstrate the ability to quickly learn and effectively use hotel technology and reporting platforms.
Scheduling Requirements
This is a full-time leadership position that requires scheduling flexibility based on the needs of the hotel. The AGM must be able to work a combination of weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays and must be available to respond to urgent property needs when reasonably required.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay: $55,000–$65,000 per year, based on experience
