Full Job Description

The Director of Nursing (DON) has overall responsibility for the clinical operations of the surgery center. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will oversee nursing practice across pre-op, intraoperative, and PACU areas; ensure regulatory compliance and accreditation readiness; drive quality and patient-safety programs; lead recruiting, scheduling, and development of the nursing team; and partner with the Administrator/CEO, Medical Director, and surgeons to keep the facility running safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical leadership and patient care

Oversee nursing care delivery across pre-op, OR, and PACU to ensure safe, evidence-based practice consistent with AORN, ASPAN, and facility standards.
Serve as the clinical authority on site — available for consultation on complex patients, escalations, and intraoperative events.
Round daily on clinical areas; maintain a visible, accessible leadership presence during surgery days.
Partner with the Medical Director and surgeons on clinical protocols, preference cards, turnover standards, and case-flow optimization.

Regulatory compliance, accreditation, and quality

Maintain continuous survey-readiness for accreditation.
Lead the facility's QAPI (Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement) program: indicator selection, data review, action plans, and reporting.
Own infection prevention and control program in collaboration with the designated IP; ensure alignment with CDC and APIC guidance.
Oversee medication management, Pyxis/ADC oversight, controlled substance diversion monitoring, and compliance with state board of nursing and DEA requirements.
Maintain policies and procedures; lead annual policy review and revision cycles.
Manage emergency preparedness program, MH readiness, fire/life safety drills, and code response competencies.
Oversee nursing credentialing, competency validation, and required certifications (BLS, ACLS).

People leadership

Recruit, hire, onboard, and retain a high-performing clinical team across nursing and surgical tech roles.
Own scheduling and staffing models; maintain a strong PRN pool and productive staffing agency relationships to flex with case volume.
Conduct annual performance reviews, coach day-to-day, and address performance concerns with professionalism and documentation.
Foster a culture of psychological safety, clinical excellence, and teamwork. Be the leader nurses want to work for.
Coordinate orientation, competency assessment, and ongoing professional development for clinical staff.

Operational and financial stewardship

Partner with the Administrator/CEO on clinical budget planning, labor productivity, supply utilization, and capital needs.
Monitor key operational metrics: on-time starts, turnover times, case-cancellation rate, overtime, and patient-satisfaction scores.
Collaborate with materials management on supply chain, vendor relationships.
Participate in contract review for clinical services, staffing agencies, and clinical equipment.

Surgeon and stakeholder partnership

Maintain strong, professional working relationships with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and office staff.
Lead block-time utilization discussions with the Administrator/CEO and Medical Director.

Required Qualifications

Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in FL— or compact state eligibility.
BSN required; MSN or MHA/MBA preferred.
Minimum 5 years perioperative nursing experience, including substantial OR circulator experience; ASC experience strongly preferred.
Minimum 3 years progressive nursing leadership experience (charge, clinical coordinator, manager, or director).
Current BLS and ACLS certifications
Working knowledge of CMS Conditions for Coverage for ASCs and experience supporting accreditation surveys.
Demonstrated ability to lead people, run regulatory programs, and partner effectively with physicians.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior DON, Clinical Director, or OR Manager experience in an ASC.
Experience with ophthalmology.
Familiarity with Nextech.
Experience building and managing PRN pools and staffing agency relationships.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary commensurate with experience — $62,000 - $70,000.
