Founded in 1932, Ashland Addison Florist is a fourth-generation, family-owned business that has proudly been Chicago’s favorite florist almost a decade. We are a well-established large-sized floral business with six locations throughout Chicago and the suburbs. With a dedicated team of 90+ employees, we continue to grow while maintaining the same commitment to quality and service that has made us a trusted name in the floral industry.

Job Responsibilities

As the Lead Floral Buyer, you will be responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing fresh floral inventory while overseeing quality control, vendor relationships, and inventory planning. This role also includes collaboration with store leadership, designers, and operations to ensure product availability aligns with seasonal demand, holidays, and special events. Leadership responsibilities may include training, mentoring, and guiding team members involved in floral processing and inventory management.

Vendor Management, Sourcing & Sales

Utilizing our vendor relationships to obtain the fresh floral product our company needs fulfill our commitments, at favorable pricing and quality
Negotiate pricing, terms, and volume commitments with vendors to optimize margins while maintaining quality standards
Identifying new client opportunities and capitalizing on them to increase sales

Strategy, Financial Oversight & Performance

Ability to quickly reprioritize, adapt to changing demands, and make sound decisions in real time
Balances short-term demands with decisions that serve the company’s long-term interests
Coordinate with accounting to ensure numbers align, store costs are accurate, documented, and reconciled, and the overall financials make sense
Own key performance metrics including margin, inventory turns, shrink, and in-stock rates

Inventory, Operations & Planning

Monitor and manage shrink, spoilage, and waste, implementing strategies to improve turns and reduce loss
Curate and evolve product assortment based on seasonality, customer demand, and sales performance
Plan and forecast for future requirements based on historical activity and current planning
Analyze sales data, trends, and inventory performance to inform purchasing decisions and optimize product flow
Develop and refine processes for ordering, receiving, and inventory management to ensure timely arrivals of product and improve efficiency and accuracy
Lead planning and execution for major holidays and events, ensuring product availability, pricing strategy, and operational readiness
Inspect product to ensure quality and request credits as needed

Collaboration, Execution & Leadership

Working with our internal and external customers to coordinate and fulfill product requirements
Invoice product accurately to internal and external clients
Provide leadership and guidance to the Buyer Assistant and the flower processing team, ensuring accountability and performance excellence
Other duties as required by company operational needs

Qualifications

Strong organizational skills
Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
Established business sense
Proficient in Excel
Proficient in Email Management
Motivated self starter
Familiar with providing high level of customer service
Highly reliable

Requirements

At least 2 years of experience in retail or wholesale buying, with specific experience in floral, produce or perishables
Industry knowledge of floral varieties, seasonal availability, and global sourcing
Required to work additional days/hours during floral holidays/company blackout period (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.)
