Job Description and Duties

The Information Systems Division works in collaboration with programs and county agencies, to provide solutions to systems that assist families access essentials such as, but not limited to, medical services, care providers, groceries, and transportation.

Under the direction of the IT Supervisor II, the Cloud Infrastructure Engineer serves as a technical specialist responsible for designing, implementing, operating, and optimizing cloud-based infrastructure to support CDSS mission-critical applications and services. These systems deliver secure, reliable, and scalable platforms for programs serving vulnerable Californians, including child welfare, adult protective services, and public assistance. The incumbent collaborates with architects, security teams, developers, and program stakeholders to advance CDSS's cloud adoption strategy, ensure compliance with state data security policies, federal regulations, and cost-effective resource management in a hybrid/multi-cloud environment.

Working Conditions

This work location is very convenient! The CDSS is located two blocks from the light rail and public transportation: within walking distance of the State Capitol, parks, restaurants, farmers’ markets and the Golden 1 Arena. Our building has easy access to I-5, Highway 50, and Highway 80.

This position is eligible for hybrid work in accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order N-22-25 and at the sole discretion of the Department of Social Services under California Government Code Section 14200. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be re-evaluated at any time. The incumbent will be expected to report for in office work and attend work related in-person events as deemed operationally necessary. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the CDSS policies. For positions advertised in more than one location, headquarter location may be designated on the selected candidate's primary residence location, and/or the closest CDSS location in accordance with operational need and available space. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

Your SOQ must address the following:

1.Describe a project where you used Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep to deploy a scalable environment. How did you manage and ensure consistency across development, test, and production environments?"

2. Explain how you implement Least Privilege and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) across both on-prem Active Directory and Cloud IAM roles to protect sensitive social services data.

3. CDSS requires cost optimization. Give an example of how you identified and remediated "cloud sprawl" or unnecessary resource spending without impacting system performance.

4. Walk us through your process for remediating a high-severity vulnerability found during a scan. How do you balance the urgency of the patch with the need for system uptime (using tools like MECM/SCCM)?

5. As an ITS I, you are expected to provide guidance to junior staff. How do you approach creating runbooks or SOPs to ensure knowledge transfer within the team?

This position is subject to fingerprinting clearance by the Department of Justice.
