Virginia Gay Hospital (VGH) and clinics is a privately operated, nonprofit rural hospital created by the trust of Virginia Gay, which has successfully served the needs of the people of Vinton and the surrounding communities since 1923. Our purpose is to provide quality health care services by using innovative, growth-oriented techniques and maintaining a sound financial base.

We are looking for a motivated, caring and compassionate people to join our VGH Team, which includes our Clinics, Acute Care/Medical Surgery/ER team as well as our Long Term Care.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Assists physician/physician assistant with patient examination, treatment and minor surgery. Responsible for patient medical histories, routine laboratory procedures and collection and preparation of specimens for transportation to lab. Maintain professional nursing care at all times.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare patient for examination to include; update on patient’s medical status, a brief subjective narrative of why patient is in the office, record current medication and allergies.

◼

Take patient’s height, weight, temperature, vital signs, and blood pressure in a professional manner.

◼

Assist physician/physician assistant in performing patient examinations and the following procedures:

Pap and Pelvic

Minor surgery

Incision and drainage

Lesion removal

Cast application

Other procedures as assigned

◼

Give certain medications and injections under physician/physician assistant supervision.

◼

Explain nature of examination, diagnostic tests, and/or treatment to patients at the physician’s request.

◼

Facilitate the smooth flow of patients through the office.

◼

Assist with the collection of specimens (i.e. throat cultures, UA, blood draw, drug screens, etc.).

◼

Instruct patients regarding proper preparation for tests.

◼

Prepare examination room and replenish supplies.

◼

Clean instruments and assure maintenance of diagnostic equipment.

◼

Coordinate patient flow and referrals with other departments, i.e. specialist, consultation, laboratory, radiology, and hospital personnel to insure smooth patient flow.

◼

Dispose of contaminated and disposable items in the proper container.

◼

Receive and organize the handling of medication samples.

◼

Perform venipuncture to obtain specimens for laboratory tests.

◼

Perform laboratory and diagnostic tests as requested by provider staff.

◼

Record and maintain laboratory, x-ray and medication data.

◼

Evaluate quality control within laboratory using standard laboratory test and measurement controls.

◼

Call patients with information from laboratory results, changes in medication, scheduling of procedures and referrals to specialists.

◼

Screen patient telephone calls, assess condition(s) and advise of symptomatic treatment as needed according to office protocols and/or schedule appointment with physician staff.

◼

Document all information received and treatment recommendations pertaining to telephone calls with patients or a member of patient’s family in patient’s medical record.

◼

Accurately apply procedural codes to visits as necessary.

◼

Advise patients on health care problems and distribute patient educational information as appropriate.

◼

Always accommodate patients requests and needs. Our policy is that no patient will be turned away or put off.

◼

Common courtesy in dealing with co-workers, hospital departments, and other individuals.

◼

Communicate with direct supervisor on all aspects of your job (vacation, sick leave, scheduled hours, tardiness, etc.).

◼

Responsible for learning the computer system for scheduling and patient demographics.

◼

Responsible for following established work rules, policies, procedures and dress code.

◼

Responsible for reporting to work on time and observing appropriate breaks and lunch periods.

◼

Maintain a level of professionalism at all times.

◼

Perform other duties as assigned by the Office Manager to facilitate the smooth and effective operation of the clinic.

◼

Participate in Triage duties.

◼

Gossiping and disruptive behavior between co-workers will not be tolerated.

◼

We expect employees while working to interact with patients, families, clients, co-workers and supervisors, in a positive, cooperative and supportive manner.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide receptionist services for the medical clinic receiving telephone calls, triaging patient calls and making patient appointments. Filing of medical records to patient charts and other clerical duties as necessary and time permits.

All staff may be utilized to assist in other clinics and varying hours depending on specific clinic needs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General supervision is received from the Office Manager and Provider Staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

◼

Strong telephone and interpersonal skills.

◼

High School or vocational school graduate.

◼

Graduate of an accredited program for nursing or medical assistants.

◼

Understanding of medical terminology and insurance procedures.

◼

CPR certified.

◼

Previous clinical experience preferred.

◼

Ability to stay focused and organized under high demands and situations.

◼

Ability to handle numerous situations at a time while maintaining a level of professionalism.

◼

Ability to work as a team member and follow directions.

Pay: $31.00 - $34.00 per hour
