Community Catalyst - Albion Building Community

The opportunity

Most nonprofit jobs hand you an organization that already exists and ask you to keep it running. This one is different. You'd be the first employee of Albion Building Community, working from something closer to a blank page, with real room to shape both the role and the work itself.

It's a job for someone who'd rather build than maintain. You'd spend your days connecting people, bringing resources into Albion that aren't here today, and making things happen across organizations that wouldn't happen on their own. The work is concrete and it's local, which means you'll see it show up in the community you live in, not in a quarterly report to someone far away.

And you'd have the room to actually do it. The board sets the direction and the guardrails, and inside them you'll have real room to move, to make decisions and act on opportunities without coming back for permission at every step. We're hiring someone to act, not to ask.

The role

The Community Catalyist builds and runs the shared capabilities that let Albion's organizations punch above their weight, brings in resources and partners from inside Albion and well beyond it, and is the person who knows who ought to be talking to whom. This isn't a program job and it isn't an administrative one. It's a role for someone who gets things done through relationships rather than authority.

What you'll do

Build and run shared capabilities

Develop shared roles and services that several organizations fund and use together
Structure how those arrangements work, including which partners fund what, how time gets allocated, and how competing needs get sorted out
Get the agreements in writing so the arrangements outlast the people who set them up
Recruit, support, and supervise shared staff, and keep funding partners informed and glad they're in

Bring resources in

Know where money, expertise, and people are, inside Albion and well beyond it, and connect local organizations to them
Build relationships with funders and partners upstream of any specific ask
Bring new partners into shared initiatives, and make the case for Albion to people who've never set foot here

Build shared knowledge

Develop and maintain a common resource every organization can draw on: current community data, a clear picture of what's working, and a working knowledge of who funds what and when
Keep it a community asset rather than something one person carries around in their head

Connect

Get the right people in the room, including people who don't ordinarily sit at the same table
Spot what organizations have in common before they see it themselves
Convene nonprofit directors and other community leaders regularly, and give them a place to work through shared challenges

Surface what you learn

Carry what you're seeing in the community back to the board - emerging needs, new opportunities, what's working and what isn't
Track and report on outcomes, so ABC can understand its own impact and build on it
Recommend where ABC should focus next, based on what you're learning on the ground

Who we're looking for

Someone who gets things done through relationships rather than authority. You won't have authority over a single organization you work with, and that's on purpose.

Organized enough to keep several moving pieces in the air without dropping any of them

Comfortable with small-town complexity, where everybody knows everybody, most people wear three hats, and history matters

Credible in the same day with a nonprofit director, a city official, a college dean, and a business owner

Able to hold ABC's posture. We're not here to run anybody's organization or tell anybody how to do their job.

Helpful, though we won't insist on any of it: nonprofit, civic, or community-organization experience, grant and funder knowledge, experience with shared services or collaborative arrangements, and roots in Albion or Calhoun County.

Albion Building Community (ABC) is a 501(c)(3) that exists to strengthen the long-term vitality, resilience, and capacity of the Albion community. That work runs across a lot of ground - the nonprofits, but also the civic, cultural, and community-building efforts that make Albion work.

Albion's organizations do a great deal with a little. What they mostly can't have on their own is the kind of support that only makes sense at a scale bigger than any one of them, so the same work gets done separately in a dozen places, and hard-won knowledge tends to walk out the door when somebody moves on. We're not a program organization, and we're not here to compete with the organizations already doing this work or to run anybody's shop. Our job is to build the things no single organization can build alone. We know from experience that when Albion organizations pool resources and take something on together, the results are real, for the organizations and for the community both, and we believe there's a lot more available to us than we've reached for so far.

Pay: From $25.00 per hour
