Position Summary
The Business Development Representative is AMP Lighting’s primary hunter — a relentless, sales professional whose mission is to open doors, win new accounts, and expand AMP’s reach into untapped market segments. This is not a relationship maintenance role. The BDR is responsible for prospecting, qualifying, and closing net-new B2B customers including large landscape lighting companies, landscape and lighting designers, LED OEM partners, and other commercial and professional buyers across the full AMP product ecosystem: landscape lighting, outdoor audio, security lighting, and smart home devices.
The BDR operates under the direction of the National Sales Manager and is responsible for the full new-account lifecycle: prospecting, qualifying, closing, and authorizing new AMP Pros through AMP’s proprietary ACE tool before transitioning newly won accounts to the Customer Success Associates (CSAs) for ongoing relationship management. Exceptionally large strategic accounts may involve the Key Account Manager; OEM accounts are managed by the BDR in partnership with the National Sales Manager. This individual is self-directed, metrics-driven, and thrives in environments where success is measured by new pipeline created, new accounts closed, and revenue generated from customers who had not previously done business with AMP.
Key Responsibilities
New Business Prospecting & Pipeline Development
· Build and actively manage a robust pipeline of net-new B2B prospects across target segments including large landscape lighting contractors, landscape design firms, lighting designers, and LED OEM customers.
· Conduct disciplined outbound prospecting through cold calls, email sequencing, LinkedIn outreach, trade show networking, referrals, and industry event participation to generate qualified opportunities.
· Research and identify high-potential target accounts by market segment, revenue potential, and strategic fit with AMP’s product capabilities and factory-direct model.
· Maintain a full-funnel pipeline at all times — continuously replenishing the top of funnel while advancing existing opportunities toward close.
· Utilize HubSpot CRM to log all prospecting activity, track pipeline stages, document account intelligence, and forecast new business revenue with accuracy.
Target Segment Development
· Large Landscape Lighting Companies: Identify and engage multi-crew, multi-market landscape lighting contractors who install at significant volume and are currently purchasing from competing brands or distributors. Present AMP’s factory-direct pricing, lifetime warranty, and AMP Pro program as a compelling alternative.
· Landscape Designers & Lighting Designers: Build relationships with design professionals who specify lighting for residential and commercial projects. Educate on AMP’s fixture performance, beam spread flexibility, finish options, and spec-grade quality to earn specification inclusion.
· LED OEM Customers: Prospect and develop relationships with manufacturers, brands, and companies seeking to integrate AMP-manufactured lighting components into their own product lines or private label offerings. The BDR owns OEM account relationships directly and manages them in partnership with the National Sales Manager on deal structure, pricing, product customization, and contract terms.
· Emerging Segments: Identify adjacent B2B opportunities in outdoor audio (AMP Symphony), security lighting (AMP SECURE), and smart home/control systems (AMP iQ) that align with target customer profiles and represent incremental revenue opportunities.
Solution Selling & Consultative Engagement
· Lead consultative discovery conversations with prospects — understanding their business model, installation volume, product mix, purchasing process, current suppliers, and pain points before presenting AMP as a solution.
· Present AMP’s full value proposition: factory-direct pricing, the industry’s largest inventory, fastest shipping, hassle-free lifetime warranty, and the AMP Pro authorization program and its contractor-protected pricing model.
· Develop and deliver tailored pitch presentations, product demonstrations, and sample kits to key prospects, articulating how AMP’s product ecosystem addresses the specific needs of each target customer type.
· Position AMP’s multi-category portfolio — landscape, audio, security, smart home — as a competitive advantage that allows AMP Pro partners to win more jobs and serve homeowners more completely than single-product competitors.
· Work with the National Sales Manager to structure pricing proposals, volume agreements, and first-order incentives that convert high-value prospects into active AMP accounts.
AMP Pro Authorization, Handoff & Onboarding
· Utilize AMP’s proprietary ACE (AMP Contractor Evaluation) tool to authorize new AMP Pros, completing the authorization workflow accurately and in accordance with AMP’s Pro standards before the account is formally onboarded.
· Execute a clean, documented handoff of newly authorized AMP Pros to the Customer Success Associates (CSAs), providing full context on the account’s business model, key contacts, agreed pricing, product interests, and any commitments made during the sales process — so the Pro never has to repeat themselves.
· For exceptionally large or strategically complex accounts, coordinate with the Key Account Manager to determine the appropriate long-term ownership structure. The majority of new AMP Pro accounts transition directly to the CSA team for ongoing support and relationship management.
Industry Presence & Market Intelligence
· Represent AMP Lighting at key industry trade shows, conferences, and events — including HNA (Hardscape North America), CEDIA, LightFair, PSP Expo, and regional landscaping and lighting industry events — to generate leads, build brand awareness, and establish AMP as the go-to professional brand.
· Develop and maintain a strong personal network within the landscape, outdoor lighting, audio/visual, and smart home industries, leveraging relationships to generate referrals and introductions to high-value prospects.
· Monitor competitor activity, pricing trends, new product launches, and distribution channel changes — reporting market intelligence to the National Sales Manager and leadership to inform competitive strategy.
· Identify emerging industry trends, new customer segments, and untapped geographic markets that represent growth opportunities for AMP’s B2B channel.
Sales Reporting & CRM Discipline
· Maintain meticulous records in HubSpot CRM — documenting all outbound activity, prospect interactions, pipeline stages, meeting notes, and account intelligence in real time.
· Provide weekly pipeline updates and monthly new business forecasts to the National Sales Manager, with clear visibility into prospecting activity, opportunity stage distribution, and projected close dates.
· Track and report on key performance metrics: new accounts opened, pipeline value generated, first-order revenue, conversion rates by segment, and time-to-close by account type.
· Participate in regular sales reviews with the National Sales Manager, sharing field intelligence, segment insights, competitive observations, and pipeline health updates that inform broader go-to-market strategy.
Qualifications
Required
· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or a related field; relevant experience may substitute.
· Minimum 3–5 years of proven B2B outside or field sales experience with a demonstrated track record of new business development — hunting, not farming.
· Experience selling into the landscape, lighting, electrical, construction, audio/visual, or smart home industries strongly preferred.
· Demonstrated ability to manage a full sales cycle from cold prospecting through close in a competitive, technical product environment.
· Strong consultative selling skills — ability to lead discovery, understand complex buyer needs, and present compelling, customized solutions.
· Proficiency in HubSpot CRM or a comparable CRM platform; disciplined pipeline management and activity tracking habits.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present confidently to contractors, designers, and business owners.
· Self-directed and highly motivated — able to manage a territory independently while maintaining alignment with National Sales Manager direction.
· Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel up to 50% for customer visits, trade shows, and industry events.
Preferred
· Existing network of contacts within the landscape, landscape lighting, or outdoor living industries.
· Familiarity with low-voltage landscape lighting systems — transformers, wire sizing, voltage drop, fixture selection, and system design.
· Experience with OEM, private label, or specification sales in a lighting or adjacent industry.
· Knowledge of outdoor audio/visual systems, security lighting, or smart home control platforms.
· Experience presenting to lighting designers, landscape architects, or specification-based buyers.
· Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus given the landscape industry’s workforce demographics.
