Position Summary & Responsibilities:
This Legal Assistant position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Office of Chief Counsel. This position assists in drafting contracts and agreements for the agency, including reviewing, proof-reading, editing, and modifying existing contracts and agreements. Communicate with agency staff to gain information for the drafting and editing of contracts.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Applies relevant factors such as contracting principles, governing laws, required clauses, attachments, necessary detail, and effective writing skills, while reviewing and/or drafting contracts and agreements and takes into account impact on affected personnel within the agency. Reviews, proof-reads, edits, and modifies existing contracts and agreements. Assists with maintaining online contract system and contract database.

Assists the contracts attorneys to prepare for meetings by gathering pertinent correspondence and documents, drafting preliminary information for attorneys’ review, and scheduling deadlines for completion of the work. Represents attorney at meetings to obtain and clarify needed information to brief the attorney on legal requirements or services requested at meetings.

Independently evaluates and anticipates follow-up legal requirements that would result in efficient and effective preparation of agreements, letters, or other legal papers.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Six months’ experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary
-
Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
-
Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Education and/or experience in the use of legal terminology, legal concepts, legal practices, and research techniques
-
Education and/or experience in drafting, proof-reading, and editing detailed documents
-
Experience in customer service and/or handling public and internal inquiries
-
Experience utilizing the Internet and specialized computer software for legal research
-
Experience with MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel, and Adobe Professional
