Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the Company’s Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Management System. This position provides leadership and technical expertise to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.

The Safety Manager partners with operations, project management, field supervision, and executive leadership to reduce risk, prevent injuries, minimize property damage, improve regulatory compliance, and support operational excellence across all company locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Safety Manager shall perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

Safety Leadership

· Promote a positive safety culture focused on hazard recognition, prevention, accountability, and continuous improvement.

· Lead by example while reinforcing the Company’s safety expectations.

· Support management in establishing measurable annual safety objectives.

· Serve as a trusted safety resource for employees, supervisors, and executive leadership.

Regulatory Compliance

· Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, EPA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

· Monitor regulatory changes and communicate updates to management.

· Maintain all required safety documentation and records.

· Assist with regulatory inspections and agency inquiries.

· Coordinate corrective actions resulting from inspections or audits.

Field Safety

· Conduct scheduled and unannounced jobsite inspections.

· Perform facility, yard, plant, shop, and equipment inspections.

· Identify unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviors.

· Recommend corrective actions and verify completion.

· Assist supervisors with Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Pre-Task Plans.

· Monitor compliance with company safety policy requirements.

Incident Management

· Respond to workplace incidents and emergencies.

· Assist in incident investigations involving:

o Employee injuries

o Vehicle collisions

o Equipment damage

o Property damage

o Environmental incidents

o Near misses

· Determine root causes using accepted investigative methods.

· Develop and monitor corrective action plans.

· Analyze injury and incident trends and communicate findings to leadership.

Training and Development

· Develop and deliver safety training programs.

· Conduct new employee safety orientation.

· Coordinate OSHA-required training.

· Provide toolbox talks and supervisor coaching.

· Maintain training records.

· Evaluate training effectiveness and recommend improvements.

Fleet and DOT Compliance

· Assist with fleet safety initiatives.

· Monitor driver qualification files.

· Support CDL compliance.

· Review Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs).

· Assist with accident review processes.

· Monitor compliance with company driver policies.

· Promote defensive driving and backing safety initiatives.

Employee Accountability

· Assist supervisors with coaching and disciplinary action related to safety.

· Promote consistent enforcement of company policies.

· Participate in performance improvement initiatives.

· Encourage employee involvement in hazard reporting.

Emergency Response

· Participate in emergency preparedness planning.

· Coordinate emergency response activities.

· Support crisis management efforts.

· Assist with severe weather, environmental releases, and serious injury response.

Technical Knowledge

The Safety Manager should possess working knowledge of:

· OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926)

· OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910)

· FMCSA Regulations

· DOT Compliance

· Construction equipment operations

· Pavement preservation operations

· Asphalt paving

· Traffic control

· Utility hazards

· Heavy equipment inspections

· Incident investigation techniques

· Root Cause Analysis

· Workers’ Compensation processes

· Risk management principles

· Industrial hygiene fundamentals

· PPE selection

· Construction safety management systems

Internal Operations

· Participate in leadership meetings.

· Assist with policy development.

· Recommend process improvements.

· Coordinate safety initiatives across departments.

· Support recruiting by participating in driver qualification reviews when requested.

· Maintain confidentiality regarding personnel matters.

· Build positive relationships throughout the organization.

· Ability to interpret regulations and translate them into practical field applications.

Minimum Qualifications

· High school diploma or GED required.

· Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or related field preferred.

· Five (5) years of construction safety experience preferred.

· Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

· Valid driver’s license with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.

· Ability to travel to company locations and project sites.

· Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends when necessary.

Preferred Certifications

One or more of the following:

· OSHA 500 Outreach Trainer

· OSHA 510

· Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)

· STSC

· First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor

· DOT Compliance Training

· HAZWOPER (if applicable)

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

· Walk active construction sites.

· Climb ladders and equipment.

· Lift up to 50 pounds.

· Stand and walk for extended periods.

· Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

· Wear required PPE.

· Travel throughout assigned regions.

Work Environment

The Safety Manager routinely works in:

· Active construction sites

· Roadways with live traffic

The position may require responding to incidents outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
