Full Job Description

Job Summary: The Surgical Technologist is a vital member of the surgical team responsible for preparing the operating room, arranging surgical instruments and equipment, and assisting surgeons during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist ensures that the operating room environment is sterile, safe, and equipped with all necessary tools and supplies for surgery. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.

Key Responsibilites

Preoperative Preparation:

Set up the operating room with surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment, ensuring that everything is sterile and in proper working order.
Arrange sterile drapes, gowns, gloves, and other materials for the surgical team.
Prepare patients for surgery by positioning them on the operating table and applying sterile drapes.
Assist in the transportation of patients to and from the operating room.

Intraoperative Assistance:

Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure, maintaining a sterile field.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by having the necessary tools and materials ready for use.
Operate and monitor specialized surgical equipment, such as electrosurgical units, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment.
Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments to prevent retained surgical items.
Assist in wound closure by applying sutures, staples, or other materials as directed by the surgeon.

Postoperative Care:

Assist in the cleaning and dressing of surgical wounds and the application of bandages.
Help transfer patients to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or recovery area.
Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment following the procedure, ensuring they are ready for the next use.
Prepare the operating room for the next patient by disposing of used materials, restocking supplies, and disinfecting surfaces.

Sterilization and Infection Control:

Adhere to strict sterile techniques and infection control practices to prevent contamination.
Monitor the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure, alerting the team to any breaches in protocol.
Sterilize instruments using autoclaves and other sterilization equipment, ensuring that all surgical tools are free from contamination.

Team Collaboration and Communication:

Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other members of the surgical team to ensure a smooth and efficient procedure.
Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and address any issues that arise during surgery.
Participate in surgical briefings, timeouts, and debriefings to ensure patient safety and procedural accuracy.

Professional Development:

Stay current with advancements in surgical technology and techniques through continuing education and certifications.
Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities related to surgical technology.
Maintain compliance with all facility policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in surgical setting preferred.
Experience in a variety of surgical specialties (e.g., orthopedics, general surgery, obstetrics) is highly desirable.

EDUCATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technology Program or equivalent experience
Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

SPECIAL SKILL, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, procedures, and sterile techniques.
Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain focus during lengthy procedures.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Proficiency in using surgical equipment and technology.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The Surgical Technologist may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting or moving patients and equipment.
Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials, with adherence to safety protocols required.
