Full Job Description

1 – Intermittent Position

JOB SUMMARY

General Description

To coordinate and maintain the overall clerical functioning of the ED. Answer phones promptly and follow through with messages or pages. Verify insurance coverage, enter physician orders, and assist with transfers to other facilities. Maintain logbooks and complete reports. Gather information from patients in compliance with EMTALA regulations so that accounts can be properly billed and collected. Enforce the credit policy by trying to collect on patients at the time of service. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Responsibility

Completes the registration process in a prompt and accurate manner. Works closely with patient representatives to ensure proper reimbursement. Ensures data quality. Answers phone and transfers calls promptly. Responsible for cash drawer. Maintains correct patient identification.

Accountability

The Admission/Unit Clerk reports directly to the Emergency Services Manager.

Special Demands

Mental: Astute communication skills with employees, physicians, visitors, patients/families and administration. Ability to adjust to job situations that involve many different people and projects, requiring some independent action and judgment.

Physical: Work is sedentary. Reaches for and handles files, forms, correspondence, and telephone. Near visual acuity is required for almost constant review of typed and hand-written material. Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids. Frequent exposure to communicable disease/illness.

Qualifications

Education: High school graduate with courses in clerical skills desirable.

Experience: Office clerical skills, use of computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machine and PBX helpful. Must have moderate and pleasant telephone and paging voice. Handwriting must be neat and legible.

Skills: Able to perform effectively in highly stressful situations. Able to interact effectively with a

wide variety of people and have good communication skills.

Employment Variables

Works mainly in the Emergency Department. Working on an as needed basis. May rotate shifts according to staff and census needs.

Salary Range

$17.76 – $21.84 per hour based on experience. This position includes paid sick time, and automatic enrollment in retirement plan with Employer match.
