Job Description

Masala House Austin is seeking an experienced, dependable Lead Indian Cuisine Cook to manage daily food preparation and cooking in our fast-paced kitchen. This full-time position is responsible for maintaining authentic flavors, consistent recipes, proper portion sizes, and high standards for food quality and presentation.

Key responsibilities include:

Prepare and cook Indian dishes, including curries, biryanis, tandoori items, appetizers, sauces, rice, breads, and vegetarian dishes.
Follow standardized recipes, portion guidelines, and presentation standards.
Prepare fresh spice blends, marinades, gravies, sauces, and other ingredients.
Coordinate cooking and order preparation during busy service periods.
Monitor food quality, taste, freshness, and temperature before orders leave the kitchen.
Organize daily prep work and ensure ingredients are ready before service.
Maintain proper food labeling, dating, storage, rotation, and inventory practices.
Follow all food-safety, sanitation, and health-department requirements.
Keep cooking equipment, workstations, and storage areas clean and organized.
Help train and guide kitchen staff on recipes, preparation methods, and safety procedures.
Communicate ingredient, equipment, and staffing needs to management.
Reduce food waste while maintaining appropriate preparation levels.
Assist with receiving and inspecting food deliveries when needed.

Qualifications

Previous professional cooking experience, preferably in an Indian restaurant or commercial kitchen.
Strong knowledge of Indian spices, cooking techniques, curries, gravies, rice dishes, and vegetarian cuisine.
Ability to follow recipes and produce consistent food in high volumes.
Dependable, organized, and able to lead by example.
Ability to work efficiently under pressure and manage multiple orders.
Knowledge of food-safety and sanitation standards; Food Handler certification required or must be obtained.
Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift up to 50 pounds.
Availability to work full time, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
