Job Description:

Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies based on physician’s preference and sets up the procedure room with the correct instrumentation and supplies.
Provides visualization for operative sites by applying appropriate methods, including tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suction, and irrigation.
Positions patients appropriately for best exposure as ordered by the physician, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, and prioritizes patient comfort and safety.
Assists with body plane closures, wound dressing applications, and securing drainage systems.
Achieves temporary and permanent hemostasis by applying appropriate techniques.
Supervises other healthcare team members in the surgical environment.
Prepares and maintains the surgical area, ensuring proper disposal of instruments, linen, trash, needles, sponges, and other biohazardous waste.
Identifies unsafe or defective instruments/equipment and implements appropriate corrective action.
Verifies completeness of instruments/sponge/needle count.
Assists the team with safe and appropriate operating room turnover times in an efficient and organized manner.
Performs operative shave prep, scrub, or other patient care tasks as assigned by the RN.
Completes all annual mandatory educational requirements.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards [Required]
Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality [Required]
Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values [Required]
Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements [Required]
Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals [Required]
Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]
Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]
Able to precept and act as resource person and preceptor in multiple surgical specialties [Required]
Proficient in a minimum of 3 major surgical specialties [Preferred]

Education:

Technical/Vocational School [Required]
Associate [Preferred]

Field of Study:

Work Experience:

5+ years of experience as first assistant [Preferred]

Additional Information:

An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the stated degree requirement:
Technical/Vocational School OR
High School Grad or Equiv AND 2+ years of experience

Licenses and Certifications:

Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Required]
NCCSA Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) [Required] OR NBSTSA Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) [Required] OR ABSA Surgical Assistant - Certified (SA-C) OR State Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) [Required]
