Full Job Description

Position Summary
The Bioaerosol Scientist will design, execute, analyze, and report laboratory studies involving biological aerosols. Work may include controlled bioaerosol generation, air purification and filtration efficacy testing, viable aerosol collection, microbial reduction studies, biological detector challenge studies, medical device aerosol risk assessments, antimicrobial or disinfection efficacy studies, and custom client-driven research.

This role is well suited for a scientist who enjoys hands-on experimental work, complex test systems, technical writing, data interpretation, client communication, and development of fit-for-purpose methods for nonstandard aerosol testing challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Design and execute bioaerosol studies involving controlled aerosol generation, aerosol sampling, microbial recovery, biological viability, particle sizing, exposure characterization, and device or product performance evaluation.
Serve as study scientist or lead scientist for client projects, including study design, protocol development, test setup, execution, data review, troubleshooting, graphing, reporting, and communication of findings.
Operate and/or learn to operate bioaerosol and aerosol science equipment such as Collison nebulizers, impingers, viable cascade samplers, filter holders, aerosol chambers, optical particle counters, aerodynamic particle sizers, particle sizing instruments, biosafety cabinets, ddPCR, ELISA, and related laboratory systems.
Support testing programs for air purification devices, HVAC systems, filters, UV/UVGI systems, aerosolized disinfectants, medical devices, biological detectors, antimicrobial materials, and other bioaerosol-related technologies.
Develop fit-for-purpose methods for nonstandard products and custom aerosol testing challenges.
Perform microbiological and biological laboratory work, which may include preparation of microbial suspensions, culture-based assays, viability assessment, serial dilution, plating, enumeration, recovery efficiency testing, and documentation.
Analyze experimental data, prepare tables and graphs, interpret results, identify anomalies, and provide scientifically sound recommendations.
Write clear, defensible technical reports suitable for client review and, where applicable, regulatory or quality-system documentation.
Maintain GLP-aligned documentation, laboratory notebooks, equipment logs, calibration records, test forms, and study files.
Work with QA/QC systems, SOPs, training records, controlled documents, and internal review processes.
Contribute to new method development, internal SOP improvements, scientific literature review, and continuous improvement of ARE Labs' bioaerosol testing capabilities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in microbiology, biology, virology, molecular biology, biomedical science, environmental health, aerosol science, chemical/biological engineering, public health, or a related scientific field.
Direct hands-on experience with growing cultures, bioaerosols, aerosolized biological agents, airborne microbial sampling, aerobiology, environmental microbiology, BSL-2 laboratory work, microbial efficacy testing, air purification testing, inhalation exposure systems, or related biological aerosol methods.
Strong hands-on laboratory skills and ability to safely conduct biological testing in a controlled laboratory environment.
Experience designing experiments, following protocols, documenting work, analyzing data, and writing technical reports.
Strong understanding of scientific principles, experimental controls, contamination control, aseptic technique, and data integrity.
Ability to troubleshoot experimental systems and identify practical solutions when tests do not behave as expected.
Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to write protocols, summaries, deviations, data interpretations, and client-facing study reports.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills for data organization, calculations, graphing, and interpretation.
Ability to work independently without micromanagement while maintaining high productivity, communication, and scientific rigor.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. preferred, especially for staff+ -level candidates, but strong BS or MS candidates with relevant hands-on bioaerosol experience will be considered.
Experience with GLP, GMP, ISO 17025-style quality systems, FDA/EPA-facing studies, or regulated laboratory documentation.
Experience with BSL-2 organisms, surrogate organisms, bacteriophage, fungal spores, bacterial aerosols, viral surrogates, or other biological challenge materials.
Experience with air purification, filtration, HVAC, UVGI, antimicrobial, disinfection, or infection-control product testing.
Experience with viable aerosol samplers, AGI impingers, midget impingers, cascade impactors, Andersen samplers, particle counters, APS/OPS/FMPS instruments, or controlled aerosol chambers.
Experience with molecular or biological assays such as ddPCR, qPCR, ELISA, plate counts, viability assays, or protein/nucleic acid quantification.
Experience with ASHRAE, ASTM, ISO, EPA, FDA, USP, or other consensus/regulatory testing frameworks relevant to aerosol or bioaerosol studies.
Experience acting as a study director, principal investigator, lead scientist, project scientist, or technical client contact.
Publication history, conference presentations, or demonstrated technical expertise in microbiology, aerosol science, environmental health, inhalation science, or related fields.
Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with pumps, tubing, chambers, valves, flow meters, nebulizers, aerosol generators, and custom-built experimental systems.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
