Welcome to Third Culture Bakery, a mochi bakery and matcha cafe!
We are a small local cafe sharing foods and drinks inspired by our childhoods as Third Culture Kids. Third Culture Bakery is rapidly growing with many new positions and opportunities quickly forming. Our Berkeley flagship store and beloved by our customers and the community and our Walnut Creek Matcha Cafe is the first of its kind in design concept for California - walking into an airy space with rainbow prism windows and sunlight for that full Third Culture experience.
We're looking for talent that aligns with our culture and brand to carry on the Third Culture story and standard to make all the matcha and mochi magic with us.
Overview:
This position will take full ownership of our Vibrant Walnut Creek Store and steer and guide the ship! Working closely with the COO and Berkeley Cafe Manager to take care of our beloved Walnut Creek Store and make sure the shop has everything it needs to run smoothly and efficiently and the store’s team is supported and meeting standards at all times. This person will need to make sure all inventory for pastries, drinks, paper goods, merchandise, and other items are ordered in a timely manner and in stock for proper usage based on sales trends. Making sure all customers receive the highest quality of service, working with Shift Leads to make sure the store’s training, staffing, inventory needs are met and everyone meets training and service standards at all times.
General Responsibilities:
- Pastry numbers and management:
- Ensure pastry orders to the kitchen meet foot traffic and sales projections each week/weekend.
- Understand how important a healthy relationship with the kitchen is.
- Managing food and perishable inventory numbers actively with the Production and Operations so that food waste is extremely low, under 5% at all times and not over-ordering but meeting sale demands each week.
- Understanding pastry sales flows using data.
- Monitoring holidays or special events for pastry and food inventory needs and adequately planning ahead with the kitchen and store team.
- Will make sure the retail store has everything it needs to run smoothly including but not limited to:
- All matcha, coffee, and beverage needs
- All paper goods and take out packaging needs (pastry boxes, bags, cold and hot cups, lids, straws, napkins, etc.)
- All marketing material needs (postcards, stickers)
- All Milk and milk alternative needs.
- Receiving shipments in a timely manner and reporting to leadership. Planning inventory levels and reporting as needed.
- Communicating smoothly with the production team and manager to make sure pastries for business needs are met.
- Making sure pastries are in perfect condition and conveying to the team if pastries need to be warmed up or handled differently.
- Knowing how to troubleshoot and exhaust all options when issues arise with point of sale, wifi and internet, power outages, pastry deliveries, and more.
- Clear emergency plans to ensure the retail team and customers stay safe and informed at all times.
- Clear holistic and specific communication between Operations, General Manager, Production Manager, and deliveries at all times.
- Clearly closing the loop and tie loose ends for orders, arrival or orders, and troubleshooting any issues with any items ordered or delivered.
- Making sure the opening and closing of stores are properly completed.
- Making sure store standards are being met at all times.
- Making sure the retail team is conveying stories, pastries, and information correctly and giving customers the Third Culture experience every time.
- Making sure equipment and machinery for the store is functioning - being able to troubleshoot repairs or if items break down.
- Properly receiving shipments or deliveries to the store and helping make sure things are where they need to be or go where they need to go. The Berkeley store will receive items needed to go to the kitchen or hold inventory for other stores, so making sure all items arrive properly and are checked in by an individual is crucial to make sure nothing is missing or lost.
- Gather time off requests for your retail team and working through any scheduling conflicts so that the store coverage is met at all times.
- Communicate any changes in schedule with team members or Directors.
- Coordinating 100% with all team members for proper retail coverage if changes occur or are needed.
- Keeping the team accountable to all HR standards. Having conversations and/or documenting as needed so proper follow up can be done.
- Knowing when to involve higher management to step-in for harder HR situations or to address certain issues that possibly can become a bigger risk or liability.
- Communicate and find resolutions for any HR issues with GM, and Directors and know how to handle issues in a safe, kind, and firm manner. Following up in a timely manner. And holding those accountable to any performance review action plans, grows, write-ups, or other disciplinary actions.
- Conduct interviews and assist with hiring needs for the store. You have the opportunity to create the team that you want, so owning that responsibility 100% and having a clear vision of the team that you want to have.
- Curating your team so that the team dynamic and energy is positive, cheerful, fun, and collaborative - this is a chance to build the team you want and really set yourself up for success.
- Manage the onboarding process including: interviewing, hiring, and training.
- Conducting reviews, provide feedback, career map for retail employees, and provide coaching for employee relations incidents
You will be accountable for:
- Making sure your Store’s team can answer phones, take phone orders, and service customers 100% on the phone at all times.
- Updating ipads / order tables for point of sale and any other software as needed.
- How to troubleshoot technical issues that affect the retail store.
- Updating store signage, rolling out new programs/campaigns and training staff on new procedures and or training materials.
- Organizing materials needed for the store and communicating with the team to ensure everyone knows and understands current programs or offerings.
- Understanding emergency protocols and can successfully navigate emergency situations ensuring the safety of the team and customers alike.
We need you to have:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- A valid Food Handlers Certificate is required prior to starting during employment.

- Truly wonderful communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to build relationships with customers, supervisors, and team members.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work in both a team environment and independently and understands the importance of prioritizing one’s tasks and times in a timely manner.
- One or more years’ experience in managerial or administrative preferably in food service, retail, and and back of house operations

- Full-time hourly position with weekend availability required. Compensation starts at $25 and includes company tip pool eligibility (adding an additional $3-$5 per hour on average).
Base salary starts at $25.00 per hour with company-pooled tips (adding an additional $3-$5 per hour on average!).
We cover 50% of health insurance through our provider. With options for vision and dental insurance, State-operated retirement savings program, generous employee discount, and lots of mochi and matcha for yourself while on shift.
