Unbridled Asphalt is a construction and site-development company serving London, Kentucky, the surrounding region, and other locations where the company has active jobsites. Our work includes asphalt paving, earthwork, site preparation, excavation for footers, and preparation of pads on grade. We are seeking a hands-on Blacktop Paving Foreman to lead daily paving activities and help deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality work.
Position Summary
The Blacktop Paving Foreman is responsible for directing daily asphalt paving operations and coordinating crew members, equipment, trucking, materials, grade requirements, and production. This person will translate project plans and field conditions into clear daily work assignments, monitor workmanship and productivity, and communicate progress, delays, and concerns to the Project Manager or Superintendent.
This is an active field-leadership position requiring practical knowledge of asphalt placement, compaction, rolling patterns, joint construction, grade control, and finish quality. The foreman must be able to plan ahead, solve field problems, maintain accurate documentation, and adjust work based on weather, site conditions, material availability, and project priorities.
Primary Role: Leading Asphalt Paving Operations
· Supervise the paving crew and coordinate daily production, sequencing, manpower, equipment, trucking, and material needs.
· Ensure asphalt is placed, compacted, jointed, and finished in accordance with plans, specifications, grades, and company quality standards.
· Maintain a safe and productive jobsite by setting clear expectations, correcting hazards, and holding crew members accountable.
· Provide timely field updates, documentation, and problem escalation to the Project Manager or Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities
Paving Operations and Production
· Conduct daily pre-job planning, review the work area, assign crew responsibilities, and establish production goals for the shift.
· Read and interpret project plans, specifications, grade stakes, elevations, slopes, and paving limits before work begins.
· Direct asphalt placement, screed operations, rolling patterns, compaction, joint construction, transitions, edges, and finish work.
· Coordinate trade sequencing, site access, trucking flow, and delivery timing to keep paving operations moving efficiently.
· Monitor weather, site conditions, material temperatures, and production progress and adjust the work plan as needed.
· Inspect completed work, identify quality concerns or required corrections, and minimize rework and material waste.
Crew Leadership, Communication, and Reporting
· Lead and direct paving crew members, equipment operators, and laborers while setting expectations for attendance, productivity, workmanship, and professional conduct.
· Confirm that employees understand their assignments, required safety precautions, equipment responsibilities, and expected production goals.
· Communicate progress, delays, material needs, site conditions, and field concerns to the Project Manager or Superintendent and coordinate with customers when directed.
· Complete accurate daily production reports, time records, equipment logs, quantity information, photographs, and other required documentation.
· Coach crew members, address performance concerns promptly, and help maintain a positive, accountable, and team-oriented work environment.
Materials, Trucking, and Equipment Coordination
· Coordinate asphalt quantities, plant and truck timing, material deliveries, equipment needs, and staging requirements with project leadership and suppliers.
· Oversee the safe and productive use of asphalt pavers, steel-drum and pneumatic rollers, skid steers, loaders, and milling equipment when applicable.
· Perform or confirm daily equipment inspections, report mechanical concerns promptly, and coordinate routine maintenance or repairs to avoid preventable downtime.
· Ensure equipment is properly operated, cleaned, fueled, secured, and ready for the next shift.
Safety and Jobsite Compliance
· Enforce applicable OSHA requirements, company safety policies, project-specific procedures, traffic-control requirements, and required PPE.
· Conduct safety meetings and toolbox talks and confirm that hazards and changing site conditions are communicated to the crew.
· Identify and correct unsafe conditions, work practices, or equipment concerns and stop work when an immediate hazard exists.
· Report accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and safety concerns immediately and complete required documentation.
Authority and Role Expectations
· The foreman directs daily paving operations and crew activities within the assigned scope. The Project Manager or Superintendent retains authority for contract changes, major budget commitments, overall project scheduling, and client commitments.
· The foreman is expected to raise schedule, quality, safety, staffing, material, and equipment concerns early enough for project leadership to take corrective action.
Minimum Qualifications
· At least two years of asphalt paving experience; five or more years of directly relevant paving experience is strongly preferred.
· Previous experience as a paving foreman, lead person, or crew supervisor is preferred.
· Strong working knowledge of asphalt placement, compaction, rolling patterns, joint construction, grade control, and quality standards.
· Ability to read construction plans, specifications, grades, elevations, and staking information and convert them into clear field direction.
· Experience coordinating paving crews, trucking, materials, and common asphalt equipment.
· Strong leadership, communication, time-management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
· Ability to work extended hours, early mornings, nights, weekends, and in varying weather conditions as project needs require.
Preferred Certifications
· OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
· First Aid and CPR certification.
· Traffic-control or flagger certification.
· Commercial Driver’s License.

Compensation
Starting pay ranges from $28 to $34 per hour. Candidates with approximately two to five years of relevant experience will generally be considered at $28 to $30 per hour, while candidates with approximately five to ten years may be considered at $30 to $34 per hour. Final pay depends on direct experience, certifications, CDL status, equipment capabilities, and leadership.
Work Environment
This position performs physically active work in outdoor construction environments and requires regular standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting, and safe access around heavy equipment and active traffic. Work schedules may vary based on weather, material availability, project deadlines, and customer needs.
