School Speech-Language Pathologist - Travel & Local | Illinois | 2026-2027 SY
Travel Pay Packages: $2,700 - $3,200 gross weekly. Each package is a blend of a taxable hourly wage plus non-taxable housing and meal stipends, which nets out comparable to an $85 - $105 per hour fully taxed salaried role. Stipend eligibility depends on maintaining a qualifying tax home under IRS rules, and we confirm your eligibility in writing before you sign.
Local Pay Packages: $60 - $85 per hour, for clinicians living within 50 miles of the assignment.
Sevn Workforce Solutions is hiring in-person School SLPs for Illinois districts, special education cooperatives, and Regional Offices of Education for the 2026-2027 school year. Illinois is one of the few states that publishes hard numbers on this shortage, and the numbers are your leverage. We help you use them.
Where We Place SLPs in Illinois
- Chicagoland and the collar counties - Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, and McHenry. The densest concentration of districts and co-ops in the state.
- Rockford, Peoria, the Quad Cities, Champaign-Urbana, and Springfield - mid-size districts with real caseloads and far less competition for the role.
- Metro East - Madison and St. Clair counties on the Illinois side of St. Louis.
- Southern Illinois and downstate rural districts - where a single vacancy hits hardest and pay flexibility is greatest.
- Special education cooperatives and joint agreements - a large share of Illinois school SLP work sits with multi-district co-ops rather than a single district. We place into both.
Why Illinois Districts Are Paying a Premium
The Illinois State Board of Education's unfilled positions collection counted 220 vacant school Speech-Language Pathologist (non-teaching) positions statewide for the 2024-2025 school year - the second-largest school support personnel shortfall in Illinois, behind only school social workers. The vacancy rate ran 7 percent for SLPs and 14 percent for SLP interns. Statewide unfilled positions remain well above 2022 levels, and in rural districts they remain roughly 67 percent above 2022. Districts know it, and they are budgeting accordingly.
Why SLPs Are Choosing Travel Contracts
- 40-65% more take-home pay than a traditional fully taxed W-2 school role. Same work, same students, much bigger paycheck.
- Non-taxable housing and meal stipends lower your taxable income and raise your net pay. This is the engine behind the numbers above.
- A built-in adventure. Spend a school year somewhere you have been curious about. Test drive a new place for nine months before you ever commit to moving there.
- Students who truly need you. Many of these districts have gone months without an SLP. Your impact is immediate and visible.
- A stronger resume. New districts, caseloads, and populations add real range to your skill set.
- Real balance. Monday-Friday schedule, school holidays, summers off, and time between assignments to recharge.
Illinois Credentialing - You Need Two Credentials, and One Shortcut Matters
Illinois requires more paperwork than most states, but there is a fast lane and most experienced SLPs qualify for it.
- Credential one: an Illinois SLP license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), Division of Professional Regulation. Out-of-state SLPs are licensed by endorsement under 225 ILCS 110/13.
- Credential two: an Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Educator License (PEL) carrying the School Support Personnel endorsement in Speech-Language Pathology (Non-Teaching). The clinical license alone does not permit district employment, and since 2022 that applies to contracted clinicians as well as direct employees.
- The fast lane: if you hold the IDFPR license and a current ASHA CCC-SLP, Illinois must issue the PEL SLP endorsement to you. No Illinois preparation program, no 150-hour school practicum, no ILTS content test. That is 105 ILCS 5/14-1.09b(c). If you have your Cs, Illinois is far simpler than it looks.
- Without the CCC: you will need a comparable out-of-state credential or approved program, either one year of PK-12 school SLP experience or 150 supervised school-based hours, and the ILTS Speech-Language Pathologist: Nonteaching exam (test 232). If you already passed another state's content test, Illinois generally exempts you from the ILTS.
- Worth knowing: Illinois is not a member of the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact, so a compact privilege will not get you into an Illinois school. Plan on the Illinois credentials, and let us file them.
We file both credentials, track them, and cover the fees. This is the single most common reason SLPs write Illinois off, and it is the easiest one to solve with someone doing the paperwork for you.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
- IDFPR Illinois SLP license, or eligibility for licensure by endorsement. We assist.
- ISBE Professional Educator License with the SLP (Non-Teaching) endorsement, or eligibility. We assist.
- CCC-SLP strongly preferred in Illinois, because it unlocks direct issuance of the ISBE endorsement
- School or pediatric experience preferred
- In-person service delivery required
The 50-Mile Rule (You May Already Qualify)
You do not have to cross state lines to earn travel pay. If an assignment is more than 50 miles from your permanent residence, you may qualify as a traveler and become eligible for the non-taxable stipends that make these packages so strong. That could mean three states away, or two hours from home inside Illinois. Plenty of our SLPs travel in-state and come home on weekends.
Within 50 miles of the assignment? You would work it as a local contract at a strong hourly rate instead. We will walk you through which path fits you, and confirm your stipend eligibility before you sign anything.
Do Not See Your Ideal District? We Build It.
Most agencies only offer what is already posted. Through our Reverse Marketing Program we work as your personal agent at no cost to you, contacting school districts, special education cooperatives, and Regional Offices of Education in your preferred part of Illinois to build an opportunity around you.
- You are the only clinician presented. No competing against a stack of resumes.
- Interviews turn into offers fast. These districts need someone now.
- Pay is often higher than standard postings because the need is urgent.
