We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Tax Preparer to join our growing public accounting firm. This position is responsible for preparing accurate individual and business tax returns, reviewing financial information, identifying legitimate tax-saving opportunities, and providing responsive, professional client service.
The ideal candidate has a strong working knowledge of federal and state tax laws, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while meeting important filing deadlines. You will work with software such as QuickBooks, Sage, UltraTax CS, SafeSend, Microsoft Excel, and other accounting and tax applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare federal, state, and local income tax returns for individuals and businesses, including C corporations, S corporations, and partnerships.
- Gather, organize, and analyze tax documents, including Forms W-2 and 1099, financial statements, receipts, depreciation schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Review client information for accuracy, completeness, and potential tax deductions, credits, and other tax-saving opportunities.
- Identify missing information and communicate with clients to obtain the documents needed to complete their returns.
- Explain tax return results and respond to client questions clearly, accurately, and professionally.
- Prepare organized workpapers and maintain complete documentation supporting tax return positions.
- Enter and review financial information using tax preparation and accounting software.
- Assist with tax projections, estimated tax payments, extensions, and tax notices as needed.
- Stay informed about changes in federal and state tax laws affecting individuals and small businesses.
- Maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive client and financial information.
- Collaborate with other team members to meet client expectations and tax-filing deadlines.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in tax preparation, public accounting, bookkeeping, accounting, or a related financial role.
- Experience preparing individual income tax returns; experience with business returns is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of federal and state income tax laws and general accounting principles.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Familiarity with tax preparation and accounting software such as UltraTax CS, SafeSend, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar applications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial information accurately.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing complete, accurate work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain tax matters clearly and professionally.
- Self-motivated and dependable, with the ability to take initiative, work independently, manage multiple assignments, and complete work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to handle confidential client information with professionalism and discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a public accounting or tax firm.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, taxation, or a related field.
