Position: Tool and Die Maker

Shift: 12 hr night shift Weekend (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)

What You’ll Be Doing:

Complies with established job safety practices, policies, and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work assignment.

Supports and follows the guidelines of the food safety system.

Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure work environment. This includes correcting unsafe acts/conditions, participating in monthly safety meetings, performing monthly safety inspections, and investigating accidents, as required.

Follows company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), practices, and Sonoco’s Global Code of Conduct.

Supports production operations by ensuring tooling and equipment are maintained and functioning properly.

Signs out all parts removed from the storeroom and returns any unused items.

Completes detailed work order documentation for all maintenance and repair activities.
-
Performs preventive maintenance tasks on a daily, weekly, monthly, or assigned schedule.

Reviews blueprints and work orders. Creates drawings or sketches of parts to be made or repaired.

Interprets drawings, calculates and determines indices, tapers, and other dimensions to be used for part(s).

Performs layout work as required.

Performs on-the-job training and development of assigned personnel.

Receives tools and paperwork; establishes and maintains logbooks.

Selects, grinds, and adjusts tools, speeds, and feed rates for efficient machining. Machines parts to precision requirements of tolerance and finish.

Sets up and operates machine tools, lathes, grinders, mills and hones.

Performs dismantling, fitting, and assembly work required for maintenance of production equipment.

Repairs and maintains assigned machines and equipment.

Assists in inspection of tooling and operates inspection equipment.

We'd love to hear from you if:
-
2- 5 years experience in tooling fabrication and die assembly for high‑speed or conversion presses (preferred).
-
Proficient in the use of precision measuring tools including scales, calipers, micrometers, telescope gauges, and dial indicators.

Ability to read and interpret machinist drawings and accurately transfer measurements to parts.
-
Skilled in operating an engine lathe with a 3‑jaw chuck for turning diameters in fixtures or chucks.
-
Capable of slab milling, face milling, and cutting keyways using end mills or cutters.
-
Proficient in boring, counterboring, drilling, reaming, and hand/power tapping.
-
Strong knowledge of proper tap and drill size selection, including decimal equivalents.

Experience in surface grinding, including grinding radii, flat surfaces, angles, and selecting appropriate grinding wheels.

Ability to use polishing stones to finish radii in die tooling.

Familiar with welding and oxy‑acetylene torch operation.

Ability to demonstrate skill in operation of grinders, lathes, drill presses and other machine shop equipment, working to tolerances of up to ± .000050.

Ability to read blueprints.

Ability to demonstrate skills relating to tool and die work.

Ability to work with basic math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

Ability to operate and functionally use a computer.
