Laser Operator

About Us

MCI is a 46-year-old industry leader in the design, manufacture, and assembly of electrical controls, electrical enclosures, irrigation pumps and controls, municipal and commercial pump stations, water purification systems and design-to-order metal fabrications. We serve a variety of industries with standard and custom products including water pumping, oil production-drill and refining controls, waste water treatment, conveying, baggage conveying, handling, process control, and more!

Job Summary

The Laser Operator sets up and operates CNC laser equipment to cut, engrave, or mark materials to specification while meeting safety, quality, and production requirements. This role loads and verifies programs, adjusts machine parameters, performs inspections, and supports revision control and routine maintenance across a variety of laser platforms.

Schedule

M - F, 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.

M - F, 10:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.

Compensation

$22.00/hr - $36.00/hr

Responsibilities

Set up and operate CNC laser systems across multiple platforms and manufacturers; load programs, select lenses/nozzles, set fixtures, and handle material safely.
Review work orders, prints, and job travelers; verify material type, thickness, grain direction (when applicable), and any special processing requirements before running parts.
Perform machine set-up adjustments including focal point and stop locations; optimize parameters (e.g., power, speed, frequency, assist gas, pierce settings) to achieve required quality and throughput.
Create, modify, and/or nest laser cut or engraving files from CAD drawings using approved software (e.g., CAD/CAM, TruTops, SigmaNEST, CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator); ensure correct orientation, kerf compensation, and feature accuracy.
Maintain electronic file organization and revision control; verify the correct program/version is released and used for production.
Monitor equipment support systems (e.g., chiller operation, process gases, filters) and track consumable levels; report low levels and coordinate reordering as needed.
Conduct first-article, in-process, and final dimensional inspections using standard measuring tools; document results per quality requirements and identify nonconforming parts promptly.
Troubleshoot routine machine and process issues (alarms, cut quality, dross, taper, misalignment, program errors) and escalate complex issues to Maintenance, Engineering, or Supervision.
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, cleaning, and daily/weekly checks per manufacturer guidance and internal SOPs; maintain maintenance and run logs.
Follow all laser and compressed-gas safety procedures, wear required PPE, and maintain a clean, organized work area; support 5S and continuous improvement initiatives and assist other fabrication operations as needed.

Desired Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate/associate degree in manufacturing, machining, or a related field preferred.
3+ years of experience operating CNC laser cutting/engraving/marking equipment (fiber, CO2, or similar).
Experience setting up jobs, selecting optics/consumables, and tuning cut parameters to meet tolerance and finish requirements.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T callouts, and work instructions.
Proficiency creating or editing laser programs from CAD data using CAD/CAM or vector graphic tools (e.g., CorelDRAW/Illustrator) and maintaining file revision control.
Working knowledge of quality measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges) and inspection documentation.
Familiarity with laser safety standards, compressed-gas handling, and preventive maintenance practices.
Experience with major laser platforms (e.g., TRUMPF, Amada, Bystronic, Mazak, or equivalent) preferred.

Minimum Qualification

High school diploma or GED.
1+ year of experience operating CNC equipment (laser, turret punch, press brake, or similar) in a manufacturing environment; laser experience strongly preferred.
Basic ability to read shop drawings/work instructions and to perform measurements with common inspection tools.
Comfort working with computers to load programs, enter data, and follow digital work instructions.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training while following SOPs and safety requirements.
Willingness to cross-train, work scheduled shifts/overtime as needed, and maintain a safe, organized work area.
